Black kids don’t become tech-savvy by accident.

They become creators, coders, designers, problem-solvers, and innovators because somebody made sure they had the opportunity to **do more than consume technology.**

Our children already know how to watch the videos, play the games, use the apps, and navigate the devices.

The next step is teaching them to ask:

**How was this built?
Can I change it?
Can I create my own?**

That kind of confidence comes from exposure, practice, culturally relevant learning experiences, and adults who make room for Black children to see themselves as the people who **build technology — not just use it.**

That’s the work.

Culture First. Code Always.

Atlanta families, your fall break plans just got more creative.

At Roots & Code Fall Break Camp, scholars will explore AI, code a micro:bit, build an interactive project, and share how it works.

We’re creating space for Black and Brown scholars to bring their curiosity, culture, and ideas into computer science—and experience the pride of saying, “I made that.”

A graduation worth celebrating—and a personal note from Coach Hicks.

I’m proud to share that I’ve graduated from the Intuit IDEAS Small Business Program!

As Coding with Culture’s founder and CEO, this experience reinforced a lesson I’m carrying forward: building a lasting educational impact requires a sustainable business.

I’m thinking more intentionally about how I plan for growth, communicate the value of our programs, and build systems that support the students, families, and schools we serve.

My coaches, Chuck with Zella Life and Misty with the Urban League, helped inspire that growth. Their commitment to my business renewed my motivation to pursue bigger opportunities and put consistent action behind the vision.

Thank you for investing in me and in the future of Coding with Culture.

Our mission continues: Building a Kindergarten-through-HBCU pathway in Computational and Design Thinking.

I’m grateful to everyone growing with us.

Black families, let’s lock in: AI can sound confident and still be wrong.

One habit we can practice together? Ask, “What evidence backs this up?”

At your next family check-in, try this:
→ Choose one claim from an AI answer.
→ Check it against a trusted source.
→ Have your child explain what they found in their own words.

That’s AI literacy in action: questioning information, checking evidence, and making informed decisions.

Our children deserve to see themselves as people who can question, shape, and create technology. Those habits can start at the kitchen table.

Swipe through for five ways to build your family’s AI literacy. Pick one to practice this week—you can learn alongside your child.

Which habit is your family locking in? Tell us below, and save this for your next family check-in.
