Tech Term of the Day: Apple silicon is a series of Mac processors developed by Apple. For several decades, Apple built Macintosh computers with CPUs from third-party manufacturers, including Motorola, IBM, and Intel. On June 22, 2020, Apple announced it would be transitioning its Mac lineup to "Apple silicon," a proprietary processor technology.

Tech Term of the Day: A sector is the smallest addressable unit of data storage on a disk drive. On traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), sectors were 512 bytes in size. However, modern drives now use 4,096-byte sectors (or "4K sectors"), also known as Advanced Format technology. The larger sector size improves performance and error correction, particularly on high-capacity drives (greater than 1 terabyte).

Tech Term of the Day: Stands for "Virtual Path Identifier."

A VPI is an 8- to 12-bit header in an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) cell that identifies the path the cell should take to its destination. An ATM cell's VPI works in conjunction with its Virtual Channel Identifier (VCI) to guide a cell as it passes through multiple ATM switches. The size of a VPI depends on the size and scale of the ATM network; small networks use an 8-bit VPI that supports hundreds of paths, while large networks use a 12-bit VPI that supports several thousand unique paths.

Tech Term of the Day: A delimiter is a text character (or a sequence of characters) that separates elements in a text string or data stream. Some delimiters separate an object into multiple pieces of data, while other delimiters establish boundaries around data to provide structure. Delimiters can provide a reliable and predictable way to split text strings for computer programming, text parsing, and data analysis

Tech Term of the Day: Compact Flash, often abbreviated CF, is a removable memory card format that uses nonvolatile flash memory. Digital cameras and other handheld electronic devices use CF cards to store and transfer digital photos, video, and other data. SanDisk introduced Compact Flash in 1994, and over time it became one of the most common removable memory card formats. However, it is becoming less common as newer formats like SD, microSD, and CFexpress become more popular, phasing out the CF slot in new digital cameras.

Tech Term of the Day: Stands for "Carbon Copy."

Cc is one of the standard email address fields. It is meant for secondary recipients of a message, while the To field is for its primary recipients. All email addresses in a message's Cc field receive a copy of the message, and will also receive any replies sent using the Reply All command. The term comes from the historic use of carbon paper to create copies of written documents and forms.
