A love letter to the darkness of the forest, the earth element, and living amongst the land. This tarot deck started as a personal tool for connecting with my Finnish heritage and quickly turned into a force bigger than I could have imagined. The way the curated paintings speak to a plethora of rural experiences and traditions that spans across cultures. I’m honored to craft a set of decks that speak to the harsh, rugged nature of the past. It’s real, it’s unforgiving, and it’s honest.
This deck allowed me to finally play with the nuances of tarot meanings. After 4 years of creating The Peculiar Pathways Tarot and writing the accompanying guidebook, I needed to stretch my creative exploration. I invested endless hours researching the RWS for that deck. Every symbol, every color, every angle of meaning. All to form my own presentation of the historical masterpiece. That was something that was important to me — to properly educate myself and dive deep into the classic system before taking my own spin on it.
I don’t flippantly create decks. It took me over a year of learning tarot before I even started creating my first oracle deck, Coastal Curiosities. All of my past experiences have led me to this point. From being a Natural Helper (did your school have that program?) to being the yearbook editor in junior high and then eventually becoming a professional designer and creative director in the advertising space in my mid 20s and a working independent artist... with so many more experiences in-between. All of my strengths funnel into this work now. Turning my pain and weaknesses into an outlet of helping others, organizing information, speaking through artwork.
All of this to say, I’m honored to do the work here that I do now. Thank you for connecting with it. It’s one of the biggest compliments I can receive as an artist. Sure, I’m a deck creator, but that’s not a term I identify with the way others might. I’m an artist, first and foremost. That’s an important distinction for me. I put language to pictures. I place words upon a visual world. The artistry of alchemy, if you will.
