M/V Charles T. Jones is a twin‑screw towboat built in 1976 by Dravo Corporation, stretching 140 × 42 ft and driven by GM 16‑645E7 diesels delivering 5,600 horsepower through Falk red 4.345:1 gears.
She moves with steady purpose along the Ohio River between Ironton, Ohio and Russell, Kentucky, a route she’s traveled more times than anyone could count.

This morning, the river wore a quiet calm — the last threads of fog lifted as the sun rose into a bright, hard sky ahead of what may become one of the hottest days of the year. In that early light, the Charles T. Jones pushed through the stillness with the kind of confidence only a seasoned riverboat carries.

Her name honors Charles T. “Charlie” Jones, a Navy Seabee and WWII minesweeper engineering officer who returned home to help build one of the most respected river operations on the inland waterways. As president and CEO of Amherst Industries and a driving force behind Madison Coal & Supply, Jones spent more than seven decades shaping the future of the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers. He chaired the Inland Waterways Users Board, earned national recognition for his service to the maritime community, and remained a steady advocate for the people who work these waters.

Naming a towboat after him wasn’t just tradition — it was acknowledgment. A nod to a man whose life’s work strengthened the river, the industry, and the generations who follow. Today, under the Amherst Madison banner, the Charles T. Jones carries that legacy forward with every mile she pushes.

M/V Evanick with Army Corps of Engineers

M/V Evanick is a twin‑screw towboat built in 2006 by Orange Shipbuilding Co. of Texas, measuring 120' x 34'. Powered by CAT 3512B diesels and Falk 4.5:1 red gears, she puts 3,500 horsepower to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Originally assigned to the Pittsburgh District, she was transferred to Huntington, West Virginia in 2016, where she continues her service on the Ohio River.

Seen here pushing heavy equipment downriver past Russell, KY, the Evanick is part of the Corps’ repair fleet — the hard‑working backbone that keeps navigation on the Ohio moving. Her job is to tow and tend the Corps’ Maintenance Branch Plant Unit: floating machine shops, weld shops, cranes, cargo barges, and hopper barges loaded with miter gates, lock valves, bulkheads, pumps, generators, and other critical components used to maintain the river’s locks and dams.

Whether she’s moving a 250‑ton crane into position, transporting replacement gates, or supporting emergency repairs, Evanick is the vessel that pushes the fleet from lock chamber to lock chamber — keeping the Ohio River’s navigation system safe, reliable, and open for the industries and communities that depend on it.

A dependable workhorse with a reputation for precision in tight lock approaches, she embodies the Corps’ mission on the river: quiet, skilled, essential work that keeps commerce flowing.

Built in 1981 at Jeffboat, the M/V John M. Rivers carries a 145' x 48' footprint and is driven by GM 16‑645E7B iron throwing 6,140 horsepower through Falk Red 4.192:1 gears. She began life as the W.M. Liggett with M/G Transport Services before Ingram Marine Group picked her up in ’94. Here she’s rolling past Russell, KY, making her way downriver toward the Greenup Locks.
