Many of you have seen the few seconds where I get run over by a bull moose.
This is the full unedited encounter from start to finish.
Back in September 2024, I was hanging trail cameras in northern Maine when I heard a cow moose calling from a nearby bog. Before long, multiple bulls started grunting back and moving toward my location. One of them eventually made his way in to investigate.
At first, it seemed like a pretty typical rutting encounter. He was grunting, raking brush, and posturing, but he wasnβt showing any obvious signs of aggression toward me.
What I didnβt realize was just how worked up he really was.
There was still a cow nearby, other bulls in the area, and he was completely focused on defending his territory from whatever or whoever was there. The closer he got, the more obvious it became that he wasnβt interested in sharing the woods.
I started backing away and trying to give him space, but things changed fast.
When he approached me, I didnβt want to run and trigger a chase response, so I started talking to him. In my experience, most moose encounters end once they hear a human voice and realize something isnβt right.
This one didnβt.
A few seconds later, he charged and ran me flat over.
Luckily, I was able to spin around and let my backpack take most of the initial impact. Afterward, I sat quietly for a few minutes to make sure he wasnβt coming back and then slipped out the opposite direction.
Looking back, there are a lot of things I would have done differently, but at the time I had no idea this video would eventually be seen by tens of millions of people around the world.
Still the craziest wildlife encounter Iβve ever experienced.
