[Production Design Breakdown] Alive Music Video
Office Maze Edition | Set Decoration + Virtual Studio + AI
When the director conceptualized this music video, the core idea stemmed from the deep-seated "yearning" of Gen Z. The office maze, constructed from endless piles of official documents, symbolizes Gen Z's bewilderment when faced with overwhelming and complex rules. Taking the director’s concept as our base, the Art Department worked closely to translate these abstract symbols into a physical set. Working alongside Grass Jelly Studio—a team renowned for storytelling and virtual effects (CG)—how did the Art Department coordinate and execute this collaboration?
For this shoot, we mapped out all the camera setups needed for the maze set, breaking down the majority of the shots into three distinct components:
Part 1: Physical Set Decoration
With only 6 hours allocated for shooting this set, we had to create a precise set decoration plan for every single camera setup. The team needed to complete the dressing for each shot as quickly as possible on site, which required pre-planning and designing the exact array patterns for tables and chairs at every camera angle.
The high walls made of file folders proved to be the most challenging aspect of this set. Stacking real paper to create walls and pillars was extremely difficult—it would have been too heavy and cumbersome to move around. We also tested using carved Styrofoam blocks to simulate stacks of files, but the result was somewhat unsatisfactory. Neither approach could meet our tight shooting timeline.
Part 2: The Magic Boxes
Assistant Director Xiao Qi suggested using stacked cardboard boxes to build the vertical planes. The post-production team at Grass Jelly then tested using AI to transform the cardboard boxes into stacks of paper, and the overall effect turned out shockingly well! Although there were some limitations regarding lighting and camera movements, we overcame them one by one. Consequently, we converted all the wall surfaces for each storyboard shot into cardboard box setups. By creating precise layout diagrams for every shot, the crew on set was able to rapidly stack the boxes into various configurations.
Part 3: Virtual LED Studio + AI + Live-Action Shoot
Even though the foreground boxes were transformed into file folders with AI assistance, walking onto the set meant seeing a scene packed with aligned cardboard boxes. The challenge with the Virtual LED Studio was that Brother Xiang from Moonshine Animation needed to simulate the distant views of the completed file folder maze post-AI transformation, extending our visuals seamlessly onto the virtual studio’s LED screens. We ran continuous camera tests and simulations right up until the day before the shoot.
Through relentless testing across multiple departments, we successfully used simple cardboard boxes to create a repetitive, seemingly endless office maze on screen!
