How do you know if a SOM is the right fit for your design?

The Comet A13 SOM is likely a good fit if:

🔹 You're paying for logic you'll never use.
138K logic elements may sound modest—until you realize that most edge applications, from sensor aggregation and motor control to protocol bridging, use only a fraction of that capacity. Right-sizing your FPGA is one of the biggest opportunities to reduce BOM cost.

🔹 Your thermal budget is tight.
With typical power consumption of just 6–8W, the Comet A13 SOM fits enclosures where a full-size FPGA board simply can't.

🔹 Your product will ship for 10+ years.
You need a production-ready SOM backed by long-term silicon availability.

The Comet A65 SOM is the better choice if:

🔹 You need serious DSP throughput for video pipelines or high-performance AI inference.

🔹 Your design requires higher transceiver bandwidth or other high-speed resources.

🔹 You expect your logic requirements to grow significantly over the product's life.

Either way, the SOM math is the same.

A carrier board is a straightforward 6–8 layer PCB your team can complete in weeks—lower cost and faster time to market because the hardest parts of FPGA hardware design have already been solved on the module.

A chip-down FPGA board—with DDR routing, power sequencing, high-speed layout, and signal integrity—is a completely different project. That difference often translates into six or more months of development time, along with the risk of at least one hardware respin.
