Today, 16th May 2026, marks an exciting moment as the Afrovate Tech Hub implements its first-of-its-kind hands-on in ,
are now everywhere. Elsewhere, drones are transforming , , , , , , , , , and ; serving industrial needs while providing a source of livelihood for skilled professionals. However, drone technology is relatively new in Sierra Leone, particularly for its technical applications.
One month ago, our Hub received drones as part of a donation package from our partner Engineers Without Borders Denmark. We planned to pilot this technology through our capacity-building program in . What started as a plan to pilot a training meant for 15 participants to test youths' interest in technology ended up attracting over 60 applications in less than one week through the call for applications.
Today, our skilled and enthusiastic youth facilitators, Kallie Balla Koroma, Albert D Bangura, and Abu Gbamoi have successfully introduced technology to the 20 participants who were competitively and inclusively selected from the 60 applicants.
Through this pilot, we have learned in practice that Sierra Leone youths are not just aware of drones as a transformative technology but are willing to take every opportunity to immerse themselves in the technology if they are given adequate space. The interest and enthusiasm from these youths were genuine.
We aim to expand this capacity building in to empower more youths to acquire skills that would earn them livelihoods.
