=============
1 May is Labour Day in China. It is a public holiday that celebrates workers' contributions to the country.
But how did this all start?
The history started in 1919, when the intelligentsia initiated insurgencies in Shanghai. One year later in 1920, Beijing and Shanghai held the first-ever demonstration in honour of all workers. This holiday was established and approved by the Chinese government in 1949.
During the 'cultural revolution', May Day was considered the most important holiday in the country. It was however, more of a political nature, as rallies and demonstrations across China were organised to celebrate this Day.
Today, Labour Day in China is regarded as a holiday for everyone in the family to get together, or travel somewhere together. During these 3 days of holidays, the Chinese travel across different cities in the country to meet friends, visit theatres, attractions and exhibitions, and/or attend different events. The streets are always lively with demonstrations and performances.
Is this the best time to travel to China? Perhaps, if you like the discounts that are given everywhere but if you hate crowds, it's advisable to avoid travelling to China during this period because everywhere you go, it will be packed!
