a beatboxer/ musician

I'd say that I was a pretty meek and shy boy back in secondary school. I started picking up beatboxing then because I was determined to stand out from my classmates. For a little bit of background, I had alot of talented classmates with various talents in many aspects such as sports, arts, gaming and even computer hacking. To be honest, I felt pretty jealous of the many skills my friends had. Soon enough, I had the opportunity to be exposed to the world of beatboxing through YouTube, and my young self was really determined to pick up this skill not knowing where it would bring me in the later years to come.

Learning beatboxing all by myself in my own bedroom was challenging but all I knew was that it made me really happy learning and achieving new sounds and routines. Slowly, as I watched many videos online to train myself, I found myself really absorbed 'in the moment'. But I guess that's the beauty of passion, isn't it?

Fast forward to when I first entered SMU, I found an opportunity for me to finally showcase a skill that I never thought I'd show off on stage! Performing for gigs, putting up a beatboxing item in front of hundreds of people was really a mind-blowing and humbling experience. I guess the message that I want to send out would be to have persistence in things you want to achieve in life. Sure, I initially learnt it as a way to differentiate myself, but surrounding myself with like minded people along the way helped alot in reaffirming my passion! Beatboxing wasn't learnt in a day nor a few weeks; refining the sound of the beats took me months and even years. My advice to everyone would be to persist on to find the fruits of your labor!

JUST HUMAN

I used to volunteer with disabled children. Thinking back, there were no impactful moments, but the process of watching them in their breakthroughs warms me the most. I've had to handle kids who would pinch and scream in their first month, and I ever doubted if they would even improve. Would they even remember me? Yet, each one of them who completed their therapies left with a more active limb, a more disciplined mind and there is no better reward for me than that. From there, I know I wasn't born to do big things and change the world. I am here to change people for the better, one at a time.

What an inspiration! Let us inspire you too here at VAMO. Who knows, your life may also be changed.

FICTION

Amongst my many interests, i would say my greatest passion lies amongst the arts, and out of all these i have a special fondness for writing in particular. Perhaps people don't realise it, but there are many things in this world that depend on good writing to function; communications, advertisements, contracts just to name a few. 🖊📖

Writing isn't always merely about entertainment although I must say that i do love a good story — writing allows us to immortalise thought, which is all the more important in a field such as arts management where one must deal with myriad ideas popping up at any time of the day. I am a writer and an arts manager, and i hope that my writing will bring you to places yet untouched by your mind, with the turn of a page.

The irony strikes us hard at VAMO as we're struggling to write a good caption for Timothy's post; we should check in with Timothy at VAMO for writing help. Get ready to go to places untouched by your mind with the turn of a page. (VAMO page). Sorry, Tim.

A DIFFERENT VOICE

In my life, I've always been one of the characters that stood out. People have used several adjectives to describe me- some of which included "Chatty", "Vocal", "Loud". As I grew up, I felt like being different made me weird. I sometimes would be ashamed to not blend in with the rest. Apart from my distinct appearance- as the tall, Indian girl with curly brown hair, my hobbies and personality too was never in line with most of my peers. I was into choral singing, and had been a part of various choirs for 12 years. In class, I had always been the loud girl that spoke up.

Only as I grew up, did I begin to realize that I should celebrate my uniqueness. I learnt how to celebrate the things that made me special because it made me who I am. Today, if you ask me to describe myself- I no longer apologetically quiver under my breath that I enjoy choral music, or that I love to participate in class. I embrace it. The moment we learn to love ourselves, our lives get a lot brighter 🌞

I've learnt to use my differences to my advantage. I now do emceeing and singing gigs to pursue my passion! From jazz to ballads and even mainstream pop, my love for singing enables me to cover a wide range of song types. Also, my voice extends beyond songs and into talking- where I do both formal and informal hosting. If you'd like me to help with some of your events or need a performer to do some of your favorite songs, hit me up!

Join the Namita movement 💪 ! Let's embrace our differences and use it to our advantage! Prepare your sunblock because we will brighten your lives for you.🌞🌞🌞

SOCIAL ENDEAVOURIST "When I was 13, I went on my first overseas community service trip to Chiang Mai, Thailand. We conducted a feeding program for children staying in the mountainside. Many turned up, most too poor to even bring proper plates or lunch boxes. There was a young girl of about 8, she had her younger brother wrapped in a dirty cloth bundle on her back. She came with a salvaged half-broken styrofoam piece, much like the ones our chicken breast from ntuc are placed on.

She thanked us graciously for the food, then proceeded to sit under a tree. She placed her brother on the ground and fed him first despite her own hunger. He too, was hungry and chomped down on the rice. Some of it fell onto the sand. She picked the grains and ate it, sand and all.

That scene has never quite left my heart, and I endeavour to do something about it."
