Facebook is said to be working on its own version of self-destructing messaging app Snapchat, according to new reports.

Mark Zuckerberg is supervising an internal project to build a competing video and photo sharing app, according to the Financial Times.

The app is rumoured to be called Slingshot, and could be available as early as this month.

Facebook first entered the video-messaging arena back in 2012 with Poke, a widely-derided app which was discontinued earlier this month.

The company allegedly attempted to purchase Snapchat for $3 billion at the end of last year.

Snapchat was founded by Spiegel and Bobby Murphy in September 2011 as a project for one of Spiegel's classes at Stanford University.

The app allows the user to take a photo or short video, add text and drawings, and send it to a friend for a limited period of time – usually just a few seconds. After that, the image or video clip is deleted from their friend's phone and they can never see it again, (unless the recipient manages to capture a screenshot of the image).
