“Don’t sit too close to the TV… or the hantu will pull you into the screen.”

My mum made it sound like the TV was a haunted portal and I was one butt-scoot away from becoming part of the 7pm drama. As a kid, I thought the ghost was just chilling inside, waiting for eye contact.

Now I know… she probably just didn’t want me burning my eyeballs or blocking everyone else’s view. Practical, but also traumatizing…

“Don’t cut your nails at night… or the tiger will chase and attack you.”

My mum really had me believing there was a tiger on night shift, just waiting for the sound of nail clippers. Never mind that we lived in a high rise flat.. 🤦🏻

Looking back, she probably just didn’t want me accidentally snipping off a finger under bad lighting..

“Cover your head with a towel when you poop… or the *hantu(ghost) will sit on your shoulder.”*

My mum made it sound like going to the toilet without a towel was a VIP invite for ghosts to chill on my shoulder. As a kid, I didn’t question it. I just sat there with a towel like a haunted Jedi.

Now I think it was less about spirits… and more about avoiding falling *cicak (house lizards) from the ceiling.

“Do not change seats while eating… or end up with multiple wives”

Apparently, if you change seats mid-meal, you’ll end up with many wives (or husbands). As a kid, that just made me finish my food faster and glue myself to the chair.

Probably just Mum’s clever way to stop us from causing chaos at the dinner table, because moving around with a mouthful of rice just means more mess… and more cleaning for her later.

Second lesson from my childhood survival guide, ‘Mak Aku Kata’.

“Don’t sit on the pillow unless you want your butt to erupt like a volcano.”

Mum said sitting on pillows will give you boils on your bum. But in hindsight, it probably had more to do with respecting the head (since pillows are meant for it) and not squishing them out of shape with your butt weight.

Respect the cushion, save your bu******ks!

A comic series based on the mysterious, magical, and mildly traumatic things my mum used to say when I was growing up. Was it ancient wisdom… or just a creative way to keep me from being annoying? You decide.

Mak always said I had to wash my feet before stepping into the house because if not, some *hantu might hitch a ride in. But let’s be real. She probably just didn’t want my dirty feet messing up the floor she just mopped.
