But how does it work?

There are two main types of carbon markets: compliance and voluntary markets. Compliance markets are established in response to regulatory requirement. Voluntary markets involve the issuance, purchase, and sale of carbon credits on a voluntary basis.

Carbon credits are generated by private entities or governments that implement programs certified by carbon standards to reduce emissions or remove carbon from the atmosphere.

As Singapore accelerates towards its ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, the cost of carbon tax is expected to surge within the next decade. Industrial establishments that generate scope 1 emissions equal to or greater than 25,000/tCO2e per year will be subject to the following tax.

Initially, the carbon tax was set at $5/tCO2e. However, as of March 7, 2023, a new tax schedule has been introduced, which includes gradual increases over the coming years. The tax is expected to rise to $25/tCO2e by 2025, further to $45/tCO2e by 2026, and ultimately to a range of $50-80/tCO2e by 2030.

What is carbon neutrality?

Carbon neutrality is attained when the quantity of carbon emissions equates to the quantity of carbon removal through carbon sequestration. This involves extracting carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in natural carbon sinks, such as soil, forests, and oceans. These sinks can take in and retain carbon, allowing for a balance in emissions and removal, hence achieving carbon neutrality.

However, to date, there are no man-made carbon sinks capable of removing carbon from the atmosphere at a large scale to combat global warming.

❄️Set your air-conditioner to 25°C to reduce energy usage and carbon footprint. Consider using air-conditioners with climate-friendly refrigerants for even greater impact.

♻️Swap out disposable items for reusable alternatives! Make it a habit to carry a cotton bag, bottle, and cup with you everywhere you go to reduce plastic waste.

💡Turn off lights and fans when leaving a room to reduce energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions. Lighting alone accounts for 15% of global electricity consumption and making this small change is an effective way to conserve energy.

🚿Shorter showers saves up to 9 liters of water per minute, reducing water bills, energy needed to heat water, and greenhouse gas emissions.
