We continue to see a rise in workplace fatalities in Singapore, which stands at 30 as of Jul 15. Why do workplace accidents keep repeating themselves in Singapore?

In this commentary post by NUS Associate Professor Goh Yang Miang, the reasons cited were poor safety system, culture and management.

The construction industry needs to review its safety policies and adopt technologies such as video analytics and Internet of Things devices. These technologies can aid in cultivating a stronger safety culture, acting as the eyes of the upper management.

Workers falling from heights, stepping onto false ceiling boards and getting struck by forklifts – accidents like these have typically occurred before, under similar circumstances. Employers are not reflecting and acting enough, says NUS Associate Professor Goh Yang Miang.

An unfortunate fatal accident happened yesterday (22 Jun 2022) in Singapore. A mobile crane turned and crushed a worker when he was retrieving parts from a toolbox underneath the chassis of the crane.

Heavy machinery operations are danger prone as the operator’s views are usually limited.

AiSafety deployment makes worksites and workers safe. With features such as vehicle proximity detection, alerts will be prompted when workers are at an unsafe distance from heavy machinery.

Workplace fatalities have been on the rise in Singapore lately as work activities return back to normalcy. This prompted the Ministry of Manpower to double the composition fine for offences observed during MOM inspections from S$1,000 to S$2,000 on average, up to a maximum sum of S$5,000.

AiSafety allows companies to improve workplace safety through 24/7 monitoring of activities on-site. AiSafety would then generate actionable insights for safety officers to follow up, such as rectification or retraining works. Safety officers can also use materials for workers’ retraining during safety timeouts on site.

"The recent spate of workplace fatalities is far too many, and not acceptable", said Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Monday (May 9).

Worker safety should be of utmost importance on any site and companies should find ways to improve and ensure their sites are safe. With fall-from-height contributing to more than one-third of workplace fatality, more can be done to improve safety for work-at-height.

On 1st April 2022, we announced our seed investment.

On the same day, we had our very first team bonding and company dinner. We started with team bonding activities online. Through the activities, we got to learn more about each other and the unique experiences each of us went through.

We then went for a team dinner. For our colleagues who were outside of Singapore, we made sure that they too had the opportunity to treat themselves to a good meal!
