We just unboxed the Shanling SM1.3R, and the interesting part is inside.
Most streamers use a DAC chip, the part that turns digital files into an analogue signal. The SM1.3R uses R2R instead: a ladder of 212 resistors, each held to a 0.01% tolerance. It's the second generation of the converter Shanling first used in its SCD3.3 disc player.
Around that sits a complete streamer. In the clip, an album picked on a phone starts playing on the SM1.3R over AirPlay 2, then the 5.8-inch touchscreen shows a pair of VU meters. Tidal Connect and Qobuz Connect work the same way from your phone, and Spotify and Apple Music run on the screen itself. If you keep your own music files, there's a slot inside for an M.2 SSD (drive not included).
It's not an amplifier. Connect it to your amp or active speakers through RCA or balanced XLR, or plug headphones into the 6.35 mm output on the front.
