Luxman Laboratory Reference Series – Luxman L-10 (1978-1981) 💿💜
The Luxman Laboratory Reference Series was born during a remarkable era in Japanese audio, when engineering excellence and musical performance mattered more than marketing figures. The L-10 was one of the earliest expressions of that philosophy: an integrated amplifier designed to reproduce music with realism, emotion, and long-term listening pleasure.
More than fifty years later, the L-10 remains one of the most respected integrated amplifiers of the golden age of Hi-Fi.
What defines the L-10 is its sound. Natural, fluid, and beautifully balanced, it presents voices with remarkable presence and instruments with rich harmonic texture. Its spacious soundstage and effortless musicality make it an amplifier that invites hours of fatigue-free listening.
Technically, the L-10 combines a fully discrete design, dual independent power supplies, complementary push-pull output stages, and a generously engineered power supply. Despite a modest rating of 55 watts RMS per channel into 8 ohms, it delivers authority and control far beyond what the specifications suggest.
At its heart are the original Sanken TO-66 output transistors, prized for their linearity, thermal stability, and reliability. Together with Luxman’s carefully optimized circuit design, they play a key role in the amplifier’s refined and unmistakably musical character.
The L-10 is more than an amplifier—it is a reminder of a time when engineers were free to pursue sonic excellence without compromise. More than half a century later, it remains a true masterpiece of Japanese audio engineering.
This particular unit has recently been carefully restored by Passion4HiFi, with the goal of preserving its original engineering, reliability, and sonic character.
