In November, we’ll open our doors for the 20th time. A milestone worth marking!
Join us as we look back at the years that changed everything. When innovation, and sometimes crisis, reshaped our industry, our society, and ourselves.
Next up: 2022.
In Tech one story dominated the headlines and the conversation: the public launch of ChatGPT. It completely reshaped how we work, search and research, sparking a massive wave of both hope and "doom and gloom" about our AI future. Meanwhile, DeepMind hit an incredible milestone by predicting structures for nearly all catalogued proteins known to science, proving AI’s revolutionary power in medicine.
It was also the year Elon Musk bought Twitter (complete with his infamous sink joke), and the sudden collapse of FTX triggered a brutal new crypto winter.
At Øredev our theme was “Wonderland,” focusing on building tech for good in a time of intense change. Keynotes took deep dives into ethical hacking, responsible engineering, and secure journalism, while our People & Teams track was packed with sessions navigating the new reality of remote work. Oh, and we built a massive chair to remind everyone what it feels like to be a small part of something much bigger! 🪑
In the news, the world watched the devastating Russian invasion of Ukraine, even as global Covid-19 restrictions finally began to lift. We said farewell to Queen Elizabeth II and Pope Benedict XVI, and mourned the tragic killing of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.
In the UK, political turmoil saw three different Prime Ministers in rapid succession, with Liz Truss famously being outlasted by a head of lettuce. 🥬
On the sports stage, the Beijing Winter Olympics wowed us, and the Women’s Euros marked a massive, mainstream breakthrough for women's football.
Closer to home, Malmö FF brought home the silverware by winning Svenska Cupen. On a darker note, Easter was marked by tension as Rasmus Paludan’s Quran burnings met with protests that descended into riots across the city.
In Pop Culture we all danced to Harry Styles’ As It Was, watched Bad Bunny take over the global music charts, and witnessed "the slap" that reverberated around the world at the Oscars. Stranger Things was on everyone’s lips, catapulting Kate Bush’s 1985 anthem Running Up That Hill right back to the top of the billboards.
In summary, 2022 was a year of staggering breakthroughs and deep conflict. A lot has changed since then, and the pace has only accelerated. Keeping up is harder, which means learning from each other matters more than ever.
Join us in November.
