How much was actually left after last year's Christmas mini-sessions?

The session is the short part of the job. Culling, editing, delivery and the emails are not, and that's where the day actually goes. Price the hours you don't spend shooting, keep what's included small and specific, and the format starts to hold up.

But the margin was never in the session. It's in the album, the prints, the extended shoot, and those get decided before you open bookings, not after the client has already seen the photos.

Set the Selection Galleries up to sell rather than just to deliver: when the client picks the images that go into the album, the choosing is the sale.

Then check the whole thing against the calendar, because whatever you sell still has to get through your lab before they close for the year.

It won't make the couple answer your email. It won't move your lab's deadline. It won't stop a client changing their mind about the cover two days before print.

What it fixes is the part that is actually in our hands. The evening you lose building spreads one by one. Drop the folder in, the pages come back designed around the photos you chose, in the order the story happened. You review, you adjust, you send it to the client.

O que resolve é a parte que está mesmo nas nossas mãos. A noite que se perde a montar folhas uma a uma. Arraste a pasta, as folhas voltam montadas à volta das fotografias que escolheu, pela ordem em que a história aconteceu. Reveja, ajuste, envie ao cliente.

Todos os problemas que conseguimos tirar-lhe da secretária, tiramos. O resto continua seu, como sempre foi.

What's the last day you can shoot and still have the album in their hands by Christmas?
Counting forward from today won't get you there. You have to start at the day your lab closes for the year and work backwards.
Off that date comes the lab's December turnaround, which is never the same as its June turnaround. Then however long your client takes to approve. Then your own design time, multiplied by however many albums are sitting on your desk that week, because in December it's never one.
What's left is your shooting deadline. It's normally earlier than people expect, and that's the part that stings.
The lab's time and your own you can plan for. The approval is the one nobody can predict, and it's where most December calendars come apart. Putting an approval deadline in Proofing won't make anyone faster, but at least you know when to chase.
Run your own numbers and see what date comes out.

Your client approved the album. Now what?

Once your client approves in Cloud Proofing, the project card turns green. From there:

1. Click Export.
2. Check the warnings — a photo over the safe zone, for example. Fix it, or ignore what doesn't apply.
3. Pick an empty folder, the file type, prefix, page range and color profile.

Your pages come out as numbered files, ready to send to your lab.

O cliente aprovou o álbum. E agora?

Quando o cliente aprova no Cloud Proofing, o cartão do projeto f**a verde. A partir daí:

1. Clique em Export.
2. Reveja os avisos — uma foto que passa a margem de segurança, por exemplo. Corrija, ou ignore o que não se aplica.
3. Escolha uma pasta vazia, o formato, o prefixo, as páginas e o perfil de cor.

As páginas saem numeradas, prontas a seguir para o laboratório.
