Cybersecurity Awareness Month starts today. If your business, school or organisation has a WordPress website, here is one thing to do this week.

On 22 September, WordPress released an urgent security update (version 7.1.2). It fixes a serious flaw that can let attackers take over some websites without logging in. Attackers started scanning for it within five hours.

What to do:

- Log in to your WordPress dashboard and check the version. You need 7.1.2, or the latest update for your version (for example 7.0.6, 6.9.9 or 6.8.10).
- If someone else manages your website, send them this post and ask them to confirm it has been updated.
- Keep automatic security updates switched on.
- After updating, open Users and check for any administrator accounts you don't recognise.

If nobody is looking after your website, finding out who should be is the first step.

NCERT has set a November 2026 deadline for Pakistan's provincial and sectoral CERTs to have their Security Operations Centres (SOCs) running and connected to the National SOC.

This builds a three-tier national monitoring chain:

Tier 1: the National SOC, run by National CERT
Tier 2: provincial CERTs (Punjab, Sindh, KP, Balochistan, AJK, GB) and sectoral CERTs such as SBP, HEC, PCAA and KPT
Tier 3: the SOCs of individual organisations, such as banks, insurers, universities and ports

High- and medium-severity incidents, alerts and threat intelligence are to be shared up the chain in near real time.

What this means for your organization:

The November deadline applies to the CERTs, not directly to private companies. Once your sectoral CERT's SOC is running, though, expect it to ask what incident data you can share, in what format and how quickly. Separately, in July the Director General of PKCERT said publicly that all organizations, private ones included, had been given six months to set up a SOC.

The reporting timelines are already set. Under the Pakistan Information Security Framework (PISF) 2026, a detailed report on a critical infrastructure incident is due within 72 hours. Other verified incidents must be reported within 120 hours.

A sensible first step is to find out which CERT your organization reports to and ask for its integration requirements.
