*HEC to Reverify Degrees of Over 36,000 Students*
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has decided to re-examine the academic credentials of 36,931 students enrolled at unauthorized campuses through an independent verification process.
According to the decisions announced after the meeting, an independent committee comprising experts from outside the HEC will be formed to reverify the records of students whose academic documents were previously found complete.
The HEC said it would only provide secretariat support to the committee, while some commission members recorded dissenting notes over the decision.
The commission also reviewed cases of graduates whose degrees had earlier been attested by the HEC but whose verification status was later suspended after it emerged that they had studied at unauthorized campuses. The meeting decided that those cases would also be re examined by the independent committee before further action is taken.
In addition, the HEC approved major changes to the degree attestation and equivalence system by deciding to replace the conventional physical attestation process with a fully digital, evidence based verification mechanism. The commission also abolished the requirement for submitting prior or subsequent academic qualifications for degree attestation.
