From Geffen Records to Courtroom Drama: The Untold Story Behind Nirvana’s Iconic Logo.
Robert Fisher, a former art director at Geffen Records, has long been a central figure in Nirvana’s visual history, having designed the iconic Nevermind album cover. While the "smiley face" logo was traditionally attributed to Kurt Cobain, Fisher stepped forward decades later to claim he created the x-eyed mascot in 1991 during his time at the label. Beyond the logo, Fisher’s collaboration with the band was extensive; he worked on the creative direction for the In Utero packaging and the Incesticide compilation.
His claim has sparked significant legal friction. In 2020, Fisher filed a motion to intervene in a long-standing copyright battle between Nirvana LLC and fashion brand Marc Jacobs. He asserts that as the actual creator, the rights should belong to him rather than the band's estate. Nirvana’s representatives have vigorously contested this, maintaining that Cobain is the sole author and pointing to decades of undisputed ownership. The dispute highlights the complex, often messy nature of intellectual property in rock history.
