No, the Apolaki Caldera Is Not Erupting or Dangerous
Lately, some photos have been circulating online showing a glowing ring east of the Philippines, claiming that the Apolaki Caldera might be active.
Let’s set the record straight: the Apolaki Caldera is real, but it’s completely dormant and poses no threat.
Located deep under the sea in the Philippine Rise (formerly Benham Rise), Apolaki is an enormous geological feature — actually the largest known caldera in the world, about 150 kilometers wide, even bigger than Yellowstone or Toba.
Scientists believe it formed millions of years ago after powerful volcanic eruptions reshaped the ocean floor. The name “Apolaki” comes from the ancient Filipino god of the sun and war — a fitting symbol for something so vast and mysterious beneath our seas.
Recently, some posts have linked Apolaki to the earthquakes in late September and early October, suggesting it’s “awakening.” However, there’s no scientific basis for that.
Those earthquakes were tectonic, caused by natural shifts along fault lines — not volcanic activity. The Philippines is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, where quakes are common and expected. These recent tremors are normal and not signs of volcanic movement.
In truth, Apolaki has been inactive for millions of years. It’s a geological relic, a silent reminder of our planet’s dynamic past — not a present danger.
