September 9 marks Osmeña Day, honoring the birth of Sergio Osmeña Sr.—the fourth President of the Philippines, a respected Cebuano leader, and former governor of Cebu. This date is designated as a special non-working holiday across Cebu Province under Republic Act No. 6953.

Passed in 1989, this law officially recognizes Osmeña’s vital contributions, from his leadership during World War II to his efforts in national recovery after the war. The holiday celebrates his enduring legacy and encourages civic pride, especially among the people of Cebu who hold him in high regard.

On this day, all classes and non-essential work are suspended in Cebu in observance of the holiday.
