Santos L. Oyan

A visual artist from Baguio City, believes that recreating Cordilleran Culture in a blank canvas is the best way to preserve culture. "Nothing is permanent in this world," he says. "Everything will soon go away and nothing will be left behind." His artistic journey started in high school as a hobby which later on grew as a passion for preserving the Cordilleran Culture. Just like

how every artist has their own calling, he realized his when he found himself empty, entering college as an I.T. student. He dedicated his skills and talent to Tam-awan Village, a venue for local artists in Baguio. Since he embraced his path into the creative world, he creates artworks portraying Cordilleran Culture, while digging into it deeper through his studies.

Emerge-II.

Four years ago this month, it reminded us of the first part of "Emerge", where our fellow artists exhibited at SM City Baguio. A second part was deemed possible, thanks to social media's "memories" functionality. We are here today to witness yet another emerging of artists.

Once in a while, in the midst of busyness and daily routines, artists emerge from wherever they are. To bring about the pieces they have been working on, to show us that they are still here and there, continuously creating art despite the current situation. But sometimes, artists emerge not only for artworks but also to gather and celebrate art, life, and togetherness in all the craziness happening around.

Something’s going on in a corner, what are they looking at? One wonders. Something must be of great value, for young and old to gather together.

Drawn to its beauty as one falls right into its gaze but how would you know when you’re merely a being?
As you stare some more and so did man received some grace, its body tainted--variegated by man in its purest form.

Covered in half-truths and lies as white as silk robes, people learned to pave the way to make it look more grand in one’s sight.
But can you really accept that your eyes are more powerful than the truth that sleeps beneath?

Title: Amelioration
Year: 2020

People can see that earth is dying before a scary pandemic appeared. And they are not doing anything about it. Mother Earth lies on her deathbed because of ungrateful humans. And we are careless enough to waste her gifts.

The pandemic is a wake-up call to humans and an aid to the healing of our sick nature, giving hope to our future. "Amelioration" paradoxically shows how our environment is getting better due to the pandemic. Mother earth is in sweet slumber while protected from human's undoing and blooms in her own time, at her own pace.
