The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has filed a criminal case against the driver of a colorum van who was arrested during a recent operation in Tagkawayan, Quezon.
The filing of the case of violation of Republic Act 11659, or the Public Safety Act, is in line with the instruction of LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II to step up the operation against colorum vehicles as ordered by President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos, Jr.
LTO Region IV-A Regional Director Elmer Decena said the driver was apprehended following a tip-off that he was operating a motor vehicle in transporting passengers to Masbate.
“He was not able to present any document from the LTFRB that he is allowed to operate the vehicle for transportation,” said RD Decena.
But before the driver was asked to present documents, Decena said the former tried to escape and even almost hit an LTO enforcer in the process.
Fortunately, the other LTO enforcers were able to block the way which left the driver with no option but to stop the vehicle.
All the Masbate-bound passengers were transferred to a passenger bus after the apprehension.
If proven guilty, the driver faces at least 12 years imprisonment and a maximum of P2 million fine.
The arrest of the driver was part of the aggressive operation of the LTO as reiterated by Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista.
RD Decena warned operators of colorum vehicles to stop their illegal operation as he committed to conduct aggressive operations on a daily basis.
