I’ve tried this DIY on a few GPUs before. The idea is simple: the oven acts like a crude hot air station, heating the PCB enough to reflow weakened solder joints and temporarily restore connections.

As wild as it sounds—yes, cooking your GPU—this is strictly a last-resort move. It comes with real risks and zero guarantees.

Also, never use the same oven you prepare food in. Heating PCBs at high temps can release toxic fumes that linger and contaminate surfaces.

Bottom line: this isn’t a proper fix, and it’s not something we recommend as a solution. If you’re going DIY, make sure you actually understand what you’re doing.

That said… credit where it’s due—this redditor pulled off something impressive.

Reddit User Baked a Dying GTX 1080 in the Oven and It Came Back to Life

A GTX 1080 that refused to show up in BIOS despite repasting and new thermal pads got a last resort treatment: a trip into the oven to reflow its solder joints.

It worked. The card cooled, the system reassembled, and it booted with full detection.

The oven bake trick dates back to Xbox 360 days and resurfaces every few years when someone desperate enough tries it and documents the results. This Reddit post drew thousands of upvotes alongside personal success stories covering laptops and consoles saved the same way.

Experts consistently warn against it. Melting components, exploding capacitors, toxic fumes, and the reality that it is usually a short-term fix rather than a permanent solution are all on the table.

The context matters in 2026. With GPU prices soaring due to shortages and AI demand pushing RTX 5090s to double their MSRP on the secondary market, baking a card you already own starts looking like reasonable math to a lot of people.

The professionals still say find a proper repair or buy used. The Reddit thread says sometimes you just put it in the oven.

Never do this guys. Your computer is basically a "breathing machine". It needs fresh air to remove the heat generated by the CPU chip itself. Blocking it or putting things that basically choke that intake will and may cause severe and irreversible damage.

A viral footage from a repair shop shows how one woman brought in her overheating gaming laptop, only for the technician to uncover a surprisingly simple cause.

She had covered the entire bottom, including all air vents, with decorative stickers, completely blocking airflow and leading to serious thermal issues.

Component Cleaning Session for this ASUS ROG Z270-F Gaming Motherboard 🪥☁️✨
feat: intel Core i7-7700K (Unclocked CPU 🔥)

Fun fact:
The ASUS ROG Z270 was an enthusiast-grade motherboard from an era when ASUS was deep in its “overengineered on purpose” phase. Back in the 6th–7th Gen Intel days, PC overclocking 🔃 was a hands-on ritual—not a one-click preset.

This platform featured heavy VRM heatsinks, reinforced PCIe slots, and a layout that expected you to tweak voltages, test stability, and push limits. 🚫 No shortcuts. 🙅 No nonsense. 🖋️ Just engineering with intent.
