PNG DataCo signs MOU with IEPNG

PNG DataCo is committed to advancing Engineering Excellence and strengthening institutions in Papua New Guinea.

During the MOU signing, IEPNG CEO Mr. Mick Bendict commended Mr. Paul Komboi for his outstanding leadership in technology and development, particularly in expanding digital infrastructure, improving internet access, and driving technological progress across the nation.

The partnership was highlighted as mutually beneficial, offering support, leverage, and growth opportunities for the engineering profession. Special recognition was given to DataCo Engineering General Manager Mr. Tony Morrisaue for his valuable support and collaboration.

In acknowledgement of being the Honorary Fellow, Mr. Morrisaue expressed deep appreciation, stating: “The Institution is a House where Engineers live, irrespective of where we sit or how we become, we are Engineers for the Country.” He extended gratitude to the DataCo CEO and reaffirmed his commitment to continued collaboration and professional development with IEPNG.

Also, in attendance at the MOU signing were IEPNG President Mr. Gibson Holemba and the IEPNG Secretary.

GOBO All Girls School of Excellence Jimi District, Jiwaka Province, PNG

Memorandum of Understanding Signed Between PNG DataCo Ltd and GOBO All Girls National School of Excellence.

PNG DataCo Ltd today signed an MOU with GOBO All Girls National School of Excellence (GOBO NSOE), located in Jimi District, Jiwaka Province, Papua New Guinea.

GOBO NSOE is an emerging all-girls secondary school established in Jimi District to deliver quality education for young women. The institution aims to serve as a model centre of academic excellence, leadership development, and digital learning within Jiwaka Province.

The MOU establishes a partnership between DataCo and GOBO NSOE to enhance digital learning and improve campus connectivity. Under this partnership, DataCo will support Gobo NSOE through the provision of computers and laptops, ICT devices, the deployment of campus Wi‑Fi infrastructure, the implementation of basic cybersecurity and content‑filtering solutions, the delivery of satellite‑based high‑speed Internet connectivity, and the provision of subsidized bandwidth services under DataCo’s Community Service Obligation (CSO) Program (“Projects”). This partnership aims to strengthen digital education outcomes, create safe and secure online learning environments, and expand access to modern ICT infrastructure for students and teachers at GOBO NSOE.

Hon. Wake Goi, Minister for Civil Aviation and Member for Jimi, described the MOU signing as a major step forward in improving girls’ access to technology and strengthening science education.

“3G → 4G → 5G" Mobile Network Capacity & Speed Comparison

Faster Mobile Needs Stronger Backhaul.

Mobile internet speed is not only about the generation (3G, 4G or 5G) but it is also about the network behind the tower.

As the chart below shows, each generation (3G, 4G and now 5G) can deliver higher speeds, but when many users connect at once, performance drops if the Tower’s backhaul (the connection from the base station into the national network) is limited.

That is why Fibre Optic Networks to base stations are becoming essential as operators roll out more 4G and 5G sites across Papua New Guinea. Fibre provides the high capacity and low latency needed so mobile users can actually experience the benefits of modern radio technology — especially during peak hours.

In short:

* 5G on a weak backhaul performs like a congested network.
* 5G on Fibre performs like 5G.

Majority of citizens in PNG have 4G and 5G phones. It is affordable. so, competition to connect to one 4G mobile base stations is high. It can only contact up to around 100-200 people per base station for good experience. More than that will see poor quality service or experience.
