Month three egg collection numbers are in. Here's September:

August 60c an egg → September 45c

I spent more on feed in September, not less. $170 against $142. They just laid 378 eggs instead of 236.

More daylight, a few back into lay, more layer feed going in. Same routine, same food and same number of chooks. A few young ones are probably coming into lay but what a difference the extra daylight hours make.

Is everyone else getting the jump in egg numbers?

Baby goats grow up way too quick. They could really stay this small much longer.

Steady run of beef and deer farmers at the counter this last fortnight, all after tick treatment. Usually a sign the season's turned.

What surprised me when I read up on it: most of the ticks on your block aren't on your animals at all. They're down in the base of the grass, and they can sit there up to a year waiting for a feed.

Anyone seeing them on their stock yet? And where on your place do you find the most?

Quick one for the chicken keepers: what do you actually feed yours?

A) Layer pellets or mash only
B) Pellets plus wheat or maize
C) Mostly grain
D) Scraps and whatever's going

Just the letter is fine. Feed's dear, and I've been topping mine up with wheat to make the bag last.

Then I learned something that made me stop. Hens eat until they've had enough energy, then ease off. Grain is mostly energy, so every handful of wheat or maize takes the place of layer feed instead of adding to it. And the layer feed is where the protein and calcium are.

So the bag got cheaper. Did my eggs? I'm tracking it now to find out.

Has anyone properly compared, or are we all going on gut feel like I was?
