I illustrated a book cover! The Axeman’s carnival by Catherine Chidgey. This is a dream project for me I have always wanted to do a book cover. The illustration background is based on central Otago New Zealand which holds a special place in my heart. It also has shiny gold foil. Catherine is an amazing author and was great to work with. If you want to support this book it’s available in most book stores in New Zealand or online.

This project has been really important to me, my illustrators group and I have created some prints to help raise money for Women’s refuge NZ .

What does Women's Refuge do?
Their mission statement - To liberate women, children, families and whānau from family violence by providing quality services and social commentary. They provide safe houses for women as well as a crisis line, Advocacy, Referrals to support services, education and more.

I think what they do is so incredibly important so even if you can’t afford a print you can also donate a few dollars or just share this post or engage with it. 100% off all the profits go to Women’s Refuge.

Meaning behind my painting:
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the pieces with gold and other precious metals. Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. This was an important part of what I wanted my illustration to be about, the more of a light we shine on these issues and talk about them the easier it is for people to not feel alone and get help. Also, this symbolises the work that women's refuge does to help people repair their lives with love and care.
