Kate Hursthouse is an artist, illustrator, creative entrepreneur and mother of one. A former architect, Kate took an early retirement from that career to pursue graphic design and illustration. For seven years her focus was calligraphy and hand lettering, creating custom work for a wide range for businesses and brands. It took having a baby, and a global pandemic, to give Kate the courage to final
ly pursue the art career she has dreamed about since her days spent in her high school art department. Kate is passionate about the impact art, colour and creativity can have on a space, a home, and on a person's life. Her vibrant abstract artworks began pouring out of her during the chaos of 2020. Her pieces explore the idea of contained chaos, pushing the limits with colour, pattern and abstract marks, reflecting the feelings and emotions that live within her, acknowledging that beauty can always be found amongst the chaos, even in the smallest of things. Her art has become her place of calm, her place of joy and her goal is to help women find their own inner joy and calm through colour and creativity. Kate’s work has taken on a number of forms over the years from contemporary artworks and commercial illustrations to an illustrated children’s book and large scale hand-painted murals. A highlight of her career so far has been creating artworks that were gifted to the New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the Māori King Kiingi Tūheitia. She has exhibited in a number of gallery shows, including her first solo show in 2015 and her first international exhibition in Germany in March 2016, and has painted murals in New Zealand and the USA.
