WINTRY BLAST TO HIT SOUTH ISLAND PASSES THURSDAY

Drivers heading through some of the South Island’s key alpine routes should prepare for a brief burst of snow early Thursday morning.

🌨️ Arthur’s Pass (SH73): Around 1cm possible above 800m.
❄️ Porters Pass (SH73): Up to 5cm could accumulate above 800m.
🏔️ Lindis Pass (SH8): Around 1–2cm possible above 900m.

The snow is expected during the early morning hours, with conditions potentially slippery at higher elevations.

If you're travelling through these passes, slow down, check road conditions and allow extra time.

A TOUGH END TO THE SKI SEASON IN CANTERBURY.

Two Canterbury club ski fields have called it a season early after an unusually warm and wet winter stripped away snow from the lower slopes.

🏔️ Mt Cheeseman closed three weeks ahead of schedule, while Craigieburn Valley also ended operations early after repeated north-westerly winds and rain.

New Zealand has just recorded its third-warmest winter on record, with the South Island among the hardest hit by the unusual warmth.

But it’s not over everywhere — Rainbow is still hoping for a spring snowfall, while Cardrona has extended its season by a week thanks to strong late-season snow.

New Research Reveals How Kiwis Respond to Tsunami Threats !

A new New Zealand study (Earth Science New Zealand) has uncovered a worrying gap in tsunami preparedness.

Around 1 in 4 Kiwis surveyed didn’t fully understand that they should evacuate immediately after recognising natural tsunami warning signs.

The key message is simple: ''Long or strong — get gone.''

If an earthquake lasts more than a minute or is strong enough to make standing difficult, don’t wait for an emergency phone alert. Move to higher ground or as far inland as possible.

For a local-source tsunami, waves could reach the coast before an official warning has time to arrive. Every second matters. 🇳🇿

A CRISP START ACROSS NZ!

It’s a chilly start for many parts of New Zealand this morning, with clear skies helping frost settle across central and southern areas.

Temperatures have dipped as low as -2°C in Twizel and Ashburton, while Timaru reached -1°C. Meanwhile, the far north is enjoying a much milder start, with 12°C recorded around Kaitaia, Dargaville and Whangārei.

☀️ For most of the country, though, it’s shaping up to be a beautiful day — so if you can, get outside and enjoy the sunshine!

MAJOR WEATHER CONDITIONS NZ !

Wild weather is causing trouble across parts of the South Island today, with heavy rain, flooding, slips and snowfall creating hazardous travel conditions.

SH6 between Greymouth and Westport is closed after a slip at Meybille Bay, while flooding and treefalls have been reported across several other highways.

Grey and Buller are under an Orange Heavy Rain Warning, with rivers and streams expected to rise quickly and further slips possible.

❄️ Further south, Lindis Pass, Arthur’s Pass, Porters Pass and Lewis Pass could see snowfall.

If you're travelling, check road conditions first and allow extra time. More rain could mean more trouble on the roads.

WINTRY BLAST HITS THE NORTH ISLAND

Heads up if you’re heading over the Desert Road tonight. MetService has issued a road snowfall warning for SH1, with snow expected to lower to around 1000m. Up to 2cm could accumulate near the summit, making driving conditions tricky.

Meanwhile, heavy rain and possible thunderstorms are set to sweep across parts of the North Island.

A Heavy Rain Watch is also in place for the Ruahine Range, while showers and heavy falls are possible from Northland and Auckland through to the central high country, Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay.

ANOTHER 120MM ON THE WAY

The rain isn’t over yet for the Tararua Range.

MetService has issued an Orange Heavy Rain Warning, with a further 80–120mm of rain expected from 8pm Sunday until 3pm Monday.

Peak rainfall rates of 15–20mm an hour are possible overnight, increasing the risk of rapidly rising streams and rivers, surface flooding and slips. Difficult driving conditions are also possible.

Locals are being urged to clear drains and gutters, avoid low-lying areas and take extra care on the roads.

EARTHQUAKE WAKES Taranaki! 🇳🇿

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake rattled Taranaki early Sunday morning, with more than 2,000 people reporting the shake.

The quake struck at 6.46am, with GeoNet placing the epicentre 15km north of Ōpunake at a depth of 8km. Most reports came from across Taranaki, with shaking also felt elsewhere in the North Island.

It comes just a day after a magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck north-west of Paraparaumu, which was felt by almost 22,000 people.

Locals quickly took to social media describing the early-morning jolt as “short and loud”, while others said it was strong enough to wake them

LINDIS PASS COULD TURN SNOWY THIS SUNDAY!

Drivers heading through Lindis Pass on SH8 should be ready for a wintry change on Sunday.

Rain could turn to snow from late morning into the early afternoon, with up to 1cm potentially settling above 900 metres.

The warning is in place from 10am to 4pm Sunday, so if you’re travelling through the pass, take extra care and allow a little more time. 🚗❄️

A taste of winter could make the roads slippery, especially at higher elevations.

HEAVY RAIN WARNING FOR GREY & BULLER !

The West Coast is in for a very wet Sunday, with an Orange Heavy Rain Warning in place from 6am Sunday to 3am Monday.

Up to 200mm of rain could fall across the ranges, while coastal areas may see 60–90mm. Rain is expected to peak Sunday afternoon and evening, with bursts reaching 15–20mm an hour.

Streams and rivers could rise quickly, while surface flooding, slips and hazardous driving conditions are possible.

Residents are being urged to clear drains and gutters, avoid low-lying areas and take extra care on the roads
