I've been doing this job quite a while now, so potentially should be over it, but I still fizz when I see my work out in the wild. In this case it was a poster on the wall and a flyer on someone's counter. Nobody was high-fiving or knew I made them, they were just there working hard. Hopefully!

Sharing today because I walked past the GoldSaver collateral like I hadn't seen it 42 times already. FYI, GoldSaver is a gold savings plan for anyone who's not vibing a term deposit.

The Highly Commended Award goes to my thumbnail... who knew I could be chip-free for this long.

JAVLN just went live with a re-platformed website, built for better search and analytics, and they asked Chook HQ to look at the creative.

We've been building out their pop-art-inspired brand assets for a while now (the lightbulb, the laptop, all the comic-book pow), so this was a case of re-designing and rebuilding them as scalable vector assets, Ben-Day dots and bold keylines intact. The whole point of the pop-art approach is setting JAVLN apart from the rest of insurance software, with orange doing a lot of the heavy lifting.

We created a suite of icons, plus some more complex hero assets, giving the brand a graphic design toolkit it can draw on across formats and channels. We also worked through the wider page design... headers that carry the comic-book energy and FAQ sections that are easy to scan.

Chook HQ just ticked off a visual identity system for New Zealand Private Surgical Hospitals Association (NZPSHA).

NZPSHA already had a logomark, a caduceus, so the job wasn't to design a new one, it was to work out how to use it. Where it can go gold, where it needs to simplify, what it's allowed to do on a letterhead or a presentation, and what size works best on a pull-up banner.

Creating brand guidelines is up there as one of my favourite jobs. I like the problem-solving side of it… every rule is there to answer a question someone will actually ask, things like what happens on a dark background, what the minimum size is before you can't read it, and what to do when it has to share space with someone else's logo. If that's worked out properly, the same problem doesn't get solved five different ways by five different people over the next few years. Which is usually how a brand ends up looking messier than it started.

There's a nice bit of creativity in it too, finding how much room a brand has to move within its own rules. Freedom, but with terms and conditions!

A little while back, RealNZ | New Zealand Tourism Experiences let us put some ripper comedy into their Rewards and Recognition programme creative.

We used their own photography from across the South Island... ski fields, lake cruises, glowworms and farm animals, designed iconography, and linked the copy to their company values.

Why invest in employee recognition? More often than not, people are happy at work when they feel appreciated. Giving them the tools to tell a colleague or team member what they did well, and why it mattered, is a great way to make that happen, whether it's peer to peer or manager to team member. These cards, coasters and stickers are designed to do just that.

Bob's your uncle, as the saying goes. Give or take.

Chook HQ was asked to sort a name and brand for a new actuarial consultancy: Actuate.

Actuate has been founded by two senior practitioners who'd rather solve your actual problem than run it through a framework or a billable hour target. They work with businesses across New Zealand, at board, executive, and operational level.

The name's got a bit of a double meaning. "Actua" gives you actuarial (the root of it) as well as actual... real and genuine. "Activate" demonstrates forward movement and getting things done. We know our stuff, and we'll actually do something with it.

The delta symbol replaces the first A in the logo. It stands for change and growth, comes with built-in mathematical credibility (handy when your clients are all numbers people), and doubles as an upward arrow for action and forward movement. Green for growth and trust, purple for professional, while still standing out from the usual navy financial services palette.

I still couldn't really tell you what an actuary does day to day, but I'm fairly confident this brand's got more personality than most people expect from one.

We just wrapped a company-wide campaign for .newzealand. Their job is to show visitors the most amazing places on earth. ChookHQ’s job was to get their people excited about downloading a fancy new HR app.

The app is , it’s really cool, but only useful if people actually use it. So we wanted to make it impossible to ignore.

We planned it out in stages over two months starting with a ‘heads up’ through to a ‘download now’ call to action:
- Part one used the ‘we’re sorry’ social trend, but applied to very specific pain points: not knowing your leave balance, getting a payday surprise, chasing someone for answers who’s also chasing someone for answers.
- Part two was fake urgency, invented statistics and copy that was more PSA than IT rollout:

49% of leave balances are based on vibes.*

I spent last week shooting with on location at ’s geothermal power stations around the Taupō region…. contributing mainly by staying out of frame, holding the big silver disc and asking questions that revealed significant knowledge gaps.

The scale and complexity of the whole operation was genuinely mind-blowing, and the collective commitment to safety from Contact’s people was really quite impressive.

Alex did his usual magic behind the lens, and I came away knowing more than I ever expected to about steam venting and separation. Something I never thought I’d say, so that’s nice.

Last week I stepped away from Chook HQ to participate in a non-corporate team building exercise, otherwise known as The Term One School Trip.

The were substantial… I’d like to share my key takeaways.

1. KPIs matter: only two injuries were sustained in my cohort with one ice pack deployed. Well within acceptable parameters.

2. Voice activation strategies matter: you MUST utilise the power of the singing word to command group attention. A rapid-fire clap is a suitable addition when circumstances require.

3. Stakeholder buy-in is essential: holding one’s hand aloft and expecting the gesture to be reciprocated, followed by silence, can take an uncomfortably long time when the audience is between eight and nine years old. Please see point 2.

4. Know your non-negotiables: being told “you can drive instead of coming on the bus” produces a level of joy I can only compare to a $10m lottery win. Guard this privilege carefully.

5. Language matters, choose it wisely: stating “don’t run” to a group is, in practice, an invitation to maximise speed across all subsequent activities.

6. Protocol must be clearly defined: under NO circumstances should anyone attempt to stand up, unless formally invited by a qualified member of the teaching community.

Country Vets provide practical advice, no jargon, no fluff. They understand farming as a business and prioritise saving time, reducing stress and improving financial outcomes for clients. But beyond the practical side, they build long-lasting relationships with the families and farmers they work with, based on trust and reliability.

The existing vibe for vet clinics relies a lot on clichés… busy layouts, cartoon animals, the green cross graphic and messaging that reads like either a science textbook or a kid's birthday party. Neither lands well with farmers and rural families who mostly just want someone competent they can actually talk to. So the brief was to build something modern and minimalistic, with strong and a understated colour palette.

We created a that's professional enough to be taken seriously, distinctive enough to be remembered, and... no pawprints required.
