Will Gmail Work if Google is Banned in Nepal?

There are growing discussions, rumors, even that the Nepal government may consider banning major tech platforms like Google and Facebook.

While this opens up a wide range of questions about freedom, policy, and digital dependence, one simple thought keeps echoing among regular users are

1. Will Gmail still work?
It sounds like an easy yes or no question, but… it’s really not.

Because Gmail is part of Google. And if Google is banned, wouldn’t Gmail be blocked too?
Maybe. Probably.
But also, could it somehow still work? What if only some services are blocked? What if there are exceptions too?

It’s Not Just Gmail

We’ve built so much of our daily life around Google’s ecosystem. So if the ban happens, we’re not just losing gmail.

What happens to:
2. Google Drive: where so many of us store assignments, contracts, backups, and files?

3. Google Docs: used daily by students, offices, NGOs snd so on?

4. Google Meet: a common tool for virtual meetings and classes?

5. Google Cloud: which powers apps, websites, and even banks?

6. YouTube: the most-used video platform in Nepal, with thousands of creators?

And of course, Google Maps?

7. Goggle map
If Google Maps is gone, how do we navigate our cities?
Would we go back to asking people on the street? Print directions?

Do we need to buy a paper map again?
Honestly ’s hard to imagine.

8. Google Business
And then there's Google Business listings, which people rely on to check store hours, services, phone numbers, and most importantly, ratings and reviews.

Without those, how do we know which restaurant is good?
Which hospital is still open?
Which business won’t overcharge?

What About Educational and Corporate Email?

9. Google Search Engine
There is the Google Search engine, the primary reason most individuals access the internet. Do you need to check the weather? Look up the definition of a word? Search for a recipe? Track a package? Solve a mathematical equation? Acquire knowledge on any subject? We Google it. This is not merely a habit; it represents the way the internet functions for the majority of users. If Google were to be prohibited, what would take its place? Bing? DuckDuckGo? A local alternative? Even if substitutes are available, adapting to them would require time. Years of familiarity, speed, and accuracy would abruptly vanish. For students, professionals, researchers, and virtually anyone with inquiries and the absence of Google Search would be akin to losing a fundamental utility, such as electricity or running water. Would we need to purchase dictionaries once more? Maintain encyclopedias on our bookshelves as we did in the '90s? Depend on word of mouth, libraries, or printed manuals for information? It may seem outdated because it is. This illustrates how profoundly embedded Google Search has become in our daily lives: it is not merely a tool, but the cornerstone of our knowledge acquisition.

10. Google AI
Nano Banana and Gemini AI Here is Gemini AI, a clever, dependable, and quick AI friend that makes work and creativity a breeze. Use it in conjunction with Nano Banana, the portable powerhouse that keeps you productive at all times and places. However, perhaps it's time to get our hands dirty and create our own AI agent if Google and the other major firms are outlawed. Because who wouldn't want to start from fresh with coding, data training, and all that AI magic? Doesn't it sound like a good weekend project? Forget speed, ease, and knowledge. Let's just start from scratch and create our own AI! After all, we can recreate the wheel ourselves, so why rely on decades of technological innovation?

12. Google apps/ Google playstore
The Google Play Store serves as the main access point for millions of Nepalese to download and update applications on their Android devices. If Google were to be banned, what would become of this digital marketplace?Would users still have the ability to install crucial applications such as banking apps, social media platforms, educational resources, or health monitoring tools? Likely not: at least not via the official Play Store.

In the absence of Play Store access, individuals may need to depend on alternative app stores, which frequently do not meet the same security standards, reliability, and variety of applications. This situation raises significant concerns regarding malware, counterfeit applications, and the overall user experience. For many, particularly those who lack technical expertise, this could result in a loss of access to essential digital services and convenience. Furthermore, developers who exclusively distribute their applications through Google Play would lose their connection?

It’s not just .com addresses. Many universities, offices, and government agencies in Nepal use Google Workspace i.e meaning their emails run on Gmail’s infrastructure.

If Google is banned:
Will those email addresses stop working too?
What happens to communicatio
