Nepal Rastra Bank has implemented the Risk Management Guidance, 2026 for licensed Class A, B, and C banks and financial institutions.

The guidance calls for stronger management of technology and cyber risks, including continuous security monitoring through a Security Operations Center (SOC) and a Cybersecurity Incident Response Team (CIRT) to respond to cyber incidents.

Nepal Police’s Cyber Bureau has formed a 10-member team to investigate abusive, hateful, and misleading social-media content targeting people affected by the Bhotekoshi floods, including cases without formal complaints.

This action is necessary, but it raises an important question: Why should action against online abuse become visible only after a major disaster?

Cyberbullying, harassment, hate speech, impersonation, and harmful content affect people every day. Stronger reporting, investigation, and accountability are needed on ordinary days too.

CAN urges everyone to take online abuse seriously, report harmful content, and promote responsible digital behavior every day, not only during a crisis.

The Cyber Bureau has warned of scams where fraudsters pose as bank employees and contact victims through phone calls or WhatsApp, claiming their KYC details need updating.

They may then ask victims to share their screen or provide OTPs, which can be used to access bank accounts and transfer funds. Four suspects were recently arrested in connection with such a scam.

Stay vigilant and take precautions when receiving unexpected requests for KYC updates or sensitive information.

A growing scam pattern is using fake investment platforms to lure victims with promises of profits worth thousands.

These schemes often use randomly generated domains, location-based content, familiar payment platforms, and fake business details to appear legitimate. They also imitate previous e-commerce stock scams, where users are encouraged to invest money and promised returns from “profits.”

One such platform, SmartGain(smartgxbz-cdjsad.xyz), was tested by the Cyber Alert Nepal (CAN) Testing Team and was flagged with a 72% risk score.

The platform was brought to our attention through an anonymous WhatsApp tip after the sender’s uncle was reportedly close to being scammed.

Before investing online, verify the platform and business behind it, and be cautious of guaranteed or unusually high returns.
