How to plan 2020 effectively? 🔥

1// It’s not that simple... Actually, as long as you don’t know where you’re heading long term, it’s almost impossible.

2// So before you will start planning your 2020 start with the foundations:- What’s my “Why?”- Define your Ultimate Vision
- Connect the dots

Crucial questions:
- What is my why?
- Who do I want to be?
- What are my values?
- What are my strengths?
- What excites me?
- Who do I want to work with?
- What industries interest me?
- What’s my unfair advantage?

3// As you’re going to define your Ultimate Vision, it’s gonna be easier. Try to back-engineer it to the long-term plan, then to 3 years plan up to plan for 2020. How can you connect today with the plan for 2020? How can you connect your plan for 2020 with the Ultimate Vision?

Dunning–Kruger Effect in ProductDesign 🔥

Learn how not be the “Mr. Stupid” 🙈
and assess your knowledge and balance your ups and downs.

Dunning–Kruger Effect
It’s a cognitive bias in which people assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is in reality. We often have the inability to recognize the lack of our skills and knowledge. Without objective self-assessment, we are not able to plan and execute on our goals in the best possible way.

Dunning–Kruger Effect Phases:
1// Initial Overwhelm
2// Peak “Mr. Stupid”
3// Valley of Despair
4// Slope of Enlightenment
5// Plateu of Mastery

How to Take Advantage of Dunning–Kruger Effect?

Balance Your Ups and Downs
It’s also one of the entrepreneurship mantras.
When you feel great, enjoy it, but don’t over-celeberate. It won’t be easy as this always.
If you feel down in the dumps or the “Impostor Syndrome”, remember that’s part of the process.
It just takes time. Be gentle with yourself. Be impatient with acton, and patient with the results that you expect to have.

Value x Effort Matrix 🔥

1// How to make sure that we make the right decisions and take action towards the optimal strategies? Learn the Value x Effort matrix and discover how Product Managers and Business Stakeholders define priorities 🤔

2// What’s in it for You?
Live is complex, no doubts about it. Designing and developing products is even harder - there are countless factors that need to be taken into consideration. The Value x Effort matrix is a great framework to assess what to do next. You can apply it to understand the company’s or client’s priorities, see the bigger picture, know what features to work on next, but also in your personal life.

3// Quadrants of the Value x Effort Matrix
Q1: Low Hanging Fruit
Q2: Big Bets
Q3: Maybe?
Q4: Danger Zone

Prioritization — Where to Start?
Usually the best strategy is to start in the
left to corner of the Value x Effort Matrixďż˝(follow the arrow on the next slide).

Then the question is if we prefer to focus on the high-value and high effort or low-value and low-effort quadrant. It's up to you, and it depends on many factors — complexity, resources, deadlines, business requirements, certainty. One more thing - let's remember that these are our assumptions and estimations, and we should also consider known unknowns, but also unknown unknowns. Life is complex, so prioritization is. Good luck!

How to Make a Headway in the Product Design industry? 🔥

I believe there’s a number of steps that can really speed up the process of becoming more experience and valuable Product Designer.1// Understand the Whole Picture.
- Learn the basics, especially the business perspective. - By understanding the business goals, technical constraints, and product design value, you can leverage your skills and value.

2// Master Your Craft
- First things first. Learn the hard skills.
- It really matters, especially atthe beginning of the career.Make sure that it’s challenging tofind a replacement for you and your skills.
- It takes thousands of hours to become a master, but at the end of the day, that’s what matters. Better make sure you’re damn good.

3// T-Shaped Skills
- When you see the whole picture, have an expertise in one aspect, start working on the soft and the complementary skills.
- Want to learn more about T-shpaed skills? Check out the previous post.

4// Define Your Main Goal
- You can’t succeed without a clearly defined goal. It’s the foundation of all the successful initiatives and the place where everything begins.

5// Find Role Models
- Let’s be honest. Unless you are working on the bleeding edge technologies (and 99% of us does not), it has been done before.
- There are people out there (where you would like to be), usually a few years older than you are that exactly know what made them succeed. Try to follow them, understand what’s under the hood, reverse-engineer the process. What about trying to reach them?

6//Become Resourceful
- Many junior designers think that their older colleagues know how to deal with challenges through extensive knowledge and experience. In fact, it’s true, but it’s just part of the story.
7// The Ultimate Action Plan
- Develop an objective perception of the reality.
- Define your main goal in detail. - Learn and choose the best strategy.
- Take massive action towards the ex*****on.
- Assess the progress. Repeat the process.

T-shaped skills is one of the most essential concepts, especially in the Product Design industry. Being aware of that, you can design your professional path and consiously choose which skills do you need to acquire.

How to take advantage of the 2 different dimensions of skills to grow professionally and become indispensable?

There are 2 major dimentions of skills:1/ Specialist
2/ Generalist

By combination of these 2, you can become a T-skilled designer, and become a profile that most of the companies are looking for🔥

If you will spend 10+ years in the industry, at some point you might achieve the proficiency in many different aspects and become the "UX Unicorn". If you will do so - let me know! 😅

It's essential to understand clients or the employer's perspective on the two dimensions of skills.

By the nature of work and challenges, startups often lean towards people that are good at many different aspects, while big corporation looks for experts. It’s not a rule, though, so always try to verify who they are looking for.

How to find You Career Path?

While some people prefer to be in the middle of everything (i.e., Product Managers or Product Owners), other love spending all day long in Figma, AE, or coding. By the end of the day, there are good or wrong answers — it’s all about you and where do you want to be in a few years. Choose wisely!
