Hackers do not always break through your firewall, most of the time, someone lets them in without realising it.

Social engineering is the art of manipulating people into revealing information or taking actions that compromise security. It works because it targets human instinct, trust, urgency, fear, and helpfulness.

The most common forms:
1. Phishing, fake emails designed to steal credentials.
2. Vishing, phone calls impersonating IT support or your bank.
3. Pretexting, attackers creating a believable story to extract information.
4. Tailgating, physically following someone into a secure area.

The antidote is not paranoia. It is training. Staff who know what to look for will pause before they act.

This is a story about an organization that almost lost everything over a single email.

A coordinator received what looked like an email from their software provider asking them to log in and verify their account which they actually did and it turned out that the page was fake.

Within 24 hours the attacker had access to client records for over 80 individuals. Personal information, health notes, contact details. The organisation had to notify the regulator, every affected person, and their board.

The investigation lasted months but the reputational damage lasted longer.

This error was not as a result of the carelessness of the coordinator, but becuase they were busy and untrained. The email looked real because no one had ever shown them what a fake one looks like.

That is exactly the kind of scenario we simulate in our training.
