Some of you doesnât know the meaning of guarantors⊠went to the prison today (I went there for visitation with Ummah Care for the Inmates Foundation), I saw two inmates; a male and a female. They are in there because they stood as guarantors for people.
The male is an Alfa. I know him in my area and he knows me too. After lecture, he came to me, said taslim, I replied then we shook hands. I was so surprised to see him in there, honestly.
When I asked him the crime he committed, he said he stood as guarantor for someone who took loan from a firm. When it remained #600,000 to balance it up, he ran away then the firm came to arrest him (guarantor). And because he couldnât pay it, he was taken to court and from there to prison.
The female is a young lady. Sheâs a 200 level student of a university here in the southwest. Her boyfriend took #14,000,000 (fourteen million naira) loan from a firm and used her as his guarantor then he japa-ed (travelled out) to Germany after he got the money.
According to her, the guy dropped all her details (NIN, BVN, phone number etc) to the firm without her knowledge. So when they couldnât reach him, they called her, lured her to the police station. From there to court then to where she is now- the prison.
For your sake and the sake of your family, donât stand as guarantor for anybody. I repeat, donât stand as guarantor for anybody. But if you must do, make sure the person youâd stand for is someone you can actually take bullet for. Prison is not a home. You donât want to be there as an inmate, trust me.
