OBIO/AKPOR 10TH LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL HOLDS PUBLIC HEARING ON SIX EXECUTIVE BYE-LAW BILLS

The Obio/Akpor 10th Legislative Council held a Public Hearing on Six Executive bye-law Bills on Friday 7th August 2026, at the Council Hall, Rumuodomaya.

In his goodwill message, the Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, who was ably represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, Dr. Kelvin Akani, Esq., commended the Leader and Members of the 10th Legislative Council for their diligence.
He charged stakeholders present to make robust and constructive contributions to the proposed Bills, noting that their inputs will be instrumental to the growth and development of the Local Government Area.

In his address, the Leader of the Obio/Akpor 10th Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. Rex-Millia Abuchi Amadi, listed the six Executive Bills before the House and urged for massive stakeholder engagement.
He assured that all memoranda, suggestions, and recommendations received during the hearing would be given due consideration in the Committee and Plenary stages.

The Deputy Leader of the 10th Legislative Council, Hon. Nyekwere Chinda, took the Bills clause-by-clause and gave a summary of their objectives. The Bills considered are:

1. Obio/Akpor Anti-Land Grabbing, Lawful Occupation and Development Regulation Bill, 2026
2. Obio/Akpor Agency for Traffic Management Bill, 2026
3. Obio/Akpor Tenement Rate Administration Bill, 2026
4. OBALGA Security Company Limited Establishment Bill, 2026
5. Obio/Akpor Whistleblower Protection and Detection of Concealed Commercial Operations Bill, 2026
6. Obio/Akpor Local Government Area Prohibition of Street Trading, Illegal Markets, Motor Parks, Roadside Mechanics, Vulcanizers and Related Offences Bill, 2026

The Public Hearing recorded insightful contributions and memoranda from stakeholders including:
HRH King Engr. Morgan Nwenneda Amadi, KSC, JP; Eze Oha Okoporo, Okani-Eli, Okwurusi Clan, HRH Eze Raymond Okocha; Nyewe-Eli/Paramount Ruler of Choba, Dr. Anthony Egobueze; Head of Department, Political Science, Rivers State University, Engr. Amb. Chimenem Bobo Worlu, PhD; Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Rivers State Chapter, Youth Leaders, CDCs, Civil Society Organizations, Community Leaders, Captains of Industry, Political Stakeholders, and other Opinion Leaders.

The Deputy Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon
Dr. Mrs. Joyce Nyeche, also commended the Legislators for the initiative. She stated that the Bills, when passed into Law, will be in the overall interest of Obio/Akpor people and will help to curb illegalities, particularly the menace of land grabbing.

In his closing remarks, the Leader of the Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. Rex-Millia Abuchi Amadi, expressed appreciation to all participants. He assured that the House, through its relevant Committees, will carefully scrutinize the Bills alongside all inputs received for possible incorporation before passage.

The event was well attended by Traditional Rulers from various communities in Obio/Akpor LGA, Heads of Security Agencies, Representatives of Commercial Banks, Road Transport Union Leaders, Women Market Association Leaders, Youth Presidents, CDC Chairmen, and Business Stakeholders.

The program was anchored by Hon. Amb. Joy Odomene, Chief Whip, Obio/Akpor Legislative Council, and Hon. Michael Azounwu Uche, Chairman, House Committee on Information.

OBIO/AKPOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT ENGAGES ROAD TRANSPORT UNION, CALLS FOR CALM OVER FALSE DEATH RUMOURS

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, represented by the Secretary to the Local Government, today convened a strategic meeting with the leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and other relevant stakeholders to address the ongoing protest arising from reports that an individual allegedly died following a recent incident.

During the meeting, it was clarified that the report circulating about the death of the individual is false and misleading. The victim is alive and currently receiving medical treatment which the Obio/Akpor Local Government has been taking responsibilty for the medical bills.

Speaking at the meeting, the State Vice Chairman of the union, Comr. Iyke Olu, stated that the National Union of Road Transport Workers had no involvement whatsoever in the unfortunate incident. He however, assured the Local Government that the union would work closely with relevant authorities to immediately bring the ongoing protest to an end and restore normalcy.

Also speaking, Comr. Julius condemned the actions of those fueling the protest through misinformation, describing them as individuals bent on sabotaging the efforts of the Obio/Akpor Local Government and the transport union. He urged members of the public to disregard false narratives capable of inciting tension and undermining peace within the area.

In his remarks, the Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA), Sunny Worlu, charged the leadership of the union and the task force to intensify sensitisation among their members. He emphasized the need for discipline, effective communication and collaboration to prevent the spread of false information and to sustain peace and order across the Local Government Area.

This is the driver that was involved in the incident at Obiri-Ikwerre Flyover yesterday.As you can see the man is still alive and responding very fast to medical treatment.

So please let us be guided to avoid spreading misleading information that can instigate and incite chaos in the Society.But the fact remains that the council will look into the matter holistically to trackdown all those involved in all manner of illegal and unauthoized activities in the LGA.

The council will never mandate any taskforce official to go physical with any motorist or commercial driver in the name of carrying out their official duties as council Marshals.The public should take note and report perpetrators of such acts.

PRESS RELEASE

The Obio/Akpor Local Government Council has received reports of an unfortunate incident involving a tricycle operator, popularly known as Keke, which occurred this morning around the Obiri-Ikwerre Flyover axis.

The news making the rounds that the taxi driver lost his life has not been verified and confirmed as at at now, although the driver sustained serious life-threatening injury.

In view of the development, the Council calls on members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and all concerned residents to remain calm and refrain from actions capable of disrupting public safety, peace, and order.

The Chairman of the Council has directed an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident to ascertain the facts. The Council assures the public that anyone found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The Council further appeals to the protesting members of the Union to vacate the roads and remove all barricades to restore the free flow of traffic and allow residents to go about their lawful activities while investigations are ongoing.

Furthermore, the Council assures members of the affected Union to join hands with her in operational procedures that ensure free flow of traffic as well as prevent the ocurrence of such unfortunate incidents.

The Obio/Akpor Local Government Council remains committed to the protection of lives property as well as the delivery of justice in a fair, transparent and timely manner.

DR GIFT WORLU FLAGS OFF WARD-TO-WARD INAUGURATION OF RENEWED HOPE AMBASSADORS UNIT COORDINATORS IN OBIO/AKPOR

The Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area and Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in the LGA, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, on Wednesday officially flagged off the ward-to-ward inauguration of Unit Coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The inauguration commenced in Ward 1, Oro-Igwe, as part of preparations for the commencement of the Presidential and National Assembly campaigns scheduled for August 19, 2026.

Addressing the newly inaugurated coordinators, Hon.Dr. Gift Worlu and other leaders charged them to remain committed to the task ahead by mobilising support at the grassroots and working diligently to ensure the victory of all candidates of the Rainbow Coalition in the 2027 General Elections

The flag-off ceremony was attended by several prominent political leaders and stakeholders, including the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. WIFE OF OBIO/AKPOR COUNCIL CHAIRMAN DECLARES WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK 2026 OPEN

The Wife of the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Mrs. Flora Worlu, has officially declared the 2026 World Breastfeeding Week celebration open at the Council Secretariat.

The event attracted over 500 women from the 17 wards of the Local Government Area, highlighting the administration’s commitment to promoting maternal and child health.

In her address, Mrs. Worlu encouraged nursing mothers to embrace exclusive breastfeeding, describing it as a vital practice that supports healthy growth and development while protecting infants against diseases and infections.

The programme featured health education sessions delivered by medical professionals, who emphasized the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life. Participants also watched a short documentary showcasing the numerous health benefits of breastfeeding for both mothers and their babies.

Highlights of the event was the presentation of Breastfeeding Packs to all participating mothers by the Chairman’s wife as a way of supporting and encouraging them

Dignitaries in attendance included the Director of Health, Dr. Chinny Babep,the Director of Agriculture, Dr. (Mrs.) Loveline Urang,the Head of Local Government Administration, Sir Sunny Nyeche Adibe,the Supervisor for Women Affairs, Hon. Chisa Nwosu and other senior officials of the council.

COMMENCEMENT OF THE #50,000,000 OBIO/AKPOR LGA UNDERGRADUATE BURSARY SCHEME.

The Obio/Akpor Local Government Council is pleased to inform the general public that the Chairman, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, has commenced the disbursement of the first phase of ₦100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira) each to 500 eligible undergraduates of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

This initiative fulfils one of the Chairman’s key campaign promises and underscores his administration’s commitment to promoting quality education and encouraging academic excellence among students of Obio/Akpor across tertiary institutions.

Within 48 hours of the commencement of the disbursement, over 300 beneficiaries have confirmed receipt of their bursary payments. The exercise is ongoing and will continue until every beneficiary captured in the first phase has received payment.

Below are some of the payment acknowledgements shared by beneficiaries, reflecting the transparent and seamless implementation of the bursary programme.

This move reaffirms the administration’s resolve to invest in the educational advancement and future of the youths of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
