"HELP MEET"
(A Suitable Helper):
The phrase "help meet" comes from Text: Genesis 2:18:
“And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.” (KJV)
Modern translations often render it as "a helper suitable for him" or "a helper corresponding to him."
1. Meaning of "Help Meet"
The Hebrew expression combines two important ideas:
A. Helper (Ezer)
The word translated "helper" is ezer, a term often used of God Himself helping His people (Psalm 33:20; Psalm 70:5).
This means a helper is not an inferior assistant but one who provides strength, support, encouragement, and assistance where needed. Voluntarily, willingly.
B. Suitable (Kenegdo)
This means:
Corresponding to him
Complementary to him
Matching him
Fitting for him
God created woman not as a duplicate of man, nor as his servant, but as one who complements and completes what is lacking. Not a competitor. Filling the gap.
Therefore:
A help meet is a God-given partner who complements, strengthens, encourages, supports, and cooperates with another person, as typical of a wife to her husband, in fulfilling God's purpose. Not to oppose, afflict or cajole, ridicule or mock in any manner
2. Implications of Being a Suitable Helper
A. Partnership in God's Purpose
Marriage was designed as a divine partnership. Intimate relationship with mutual trust, understanding and growing faith in God.
We can appreciate oneness with God better as we understand the oneness of husband and wife
"The two shall become one flesh." (Genesis 2:24) Inseparable in thought word and deed with the fear of God
The helper joins in fulfilling God's assignment for the family based on understanding
B. Mutual Support
Each spouse strengthens the other emotionally, spiritually, mentally, and physically.
"Two are better than one..." (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)
C. Complementarity
The helper supplies strengths where the other may have weaknesses.
Just as different parts of the body work together, husband and wife contribute different gifts for a common purpose.
D. Stewardship of Family
Together they:
Raise godly children
Manage resources
Build a godly home

A healthy marriage reflects Christ's relationship with the Church (Ephesians 5:22-33).

A suitable helper is:
God-fearing (Proverbs 31:30)

Encouraging rather than discouraging
Cooperative rather than competitive
Prayerful and spiritually supportive
Committed to God's purpose

4. Challenges Facing a Suitable Helper Today
A. Cultural Distortions
Modern culture often promotes either domination or competition rather than biblical partnership.
B. Self-Centeredness
When personal ambitions overshadow God's purpose, unity suffers.

C. Communication Problems
Misunderstanding, poor listening, and unresolved conflicts can weaken the helper relationship.
D. Spiritual Neglect
A family that neglects prayer and God's Word loses spiritual direction.
E. Wrong Understanding of Roles
Many confuse helping with inferiority, whereas Scripture presents helping as a position of strength and value.
F. External Pressures
Economic hardship, career demands, social media influences, and societal expectations can strain marriages.
