BREAKING: Governor Sule Meets ASUU, JAC Leadership as Hope Rises for End to Industrial Action at NSUK

There is renewed hope for an early resolution of the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and agitation for by other university-based unions, following a high-level intervention by the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State and Visitor to Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), His Excellency, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule.

The Governor, on Thursday, 20th August, 2026, held a fruitful and constructive meeting with the leadership of ASUU and the Joint Action Congress (JAC), comprising the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), at the Government House, Lafia.

The meeting, which focused on finding a lasting solution to the current industrial action and restoring normal academic and administrative activities in the University, signals a significant step towards industrial harmony and the return of students to full academic engagement.

In attendance were the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Agbadu Akabe; Commissioner for Education, Dr. John D. W. Mamman; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Hajia Khadija Suleiman; Vice-Chancellor, NSUK, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Linkages), K’tso Nghargbu; representative of the Registrar, Hajia Ramatu Ahmed Liman (Esq.); Bursar, Mallam Murtala Abubakar Kana; Special Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor, Mallam Muhammad D. Nasiru; and Ag. Information and Protocol Officer, Jaafar Abdullahi, among other stakeholders.

The engagement underscores the commitment of the Visitor and the University Management to ensuring a peaceful resolution of the industrial dispute and safeguarding the academic future and welfare of students and staff of NSUK.

CVCNU Conference: FULafia V-C, Kida, seeks solutions to challenges facing universities

The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Lafia (FULafia), Prof. Mohammed Isa Kida, has called on Nigerian university administrators to use the 37th Annual Conference of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities to find lasting solutions to challenges confronting the sector.

Kida made the call on the sidelines of the conference, which commenced at the University of Ilorin on Monday and would end on Thursday.

The conference, attended by over 105 vice-chancellors, is themed: “Building Resilient Universities for Nigeria.”

Kida described the gathering as significant, saying it would provide vice-chancellors with an opportunity to brainstorm on the challenges facing Nigerian universities and proffer practical solutions.

He expressed his optimism about the future of the institutions, stressing that commitment and dedication among university administrators would produce positive results.

The FULafia vice-chancellor urged his colleagues to intensify efforts to improve the standards of teaching and research in their respective universities.

The conference featured plenary sessions and workshops on financing, governance, artificial intelligence, human capital and campus welfare.

Meanwhile, declaring the conference open, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the nation’s universities as critical partners in the nation’s developmental agenda.

Represented by the Minister of State for Education, Dr Suwaiba Sa’idu Ahmad, the president charged them to produce graduates capable of responding to the realities of a rapidly changing global economy.

Tinubu said the country could not achieve sustainable economic transformation without corresponding investment in human capital.

He said: “Universities are more than institutions where degrees are awarded. They are centres of knowledge creation, innovation, critical thinking, entrepreneurship, cultural development.

Appeal to Stakeholders by the Management of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, over the current Industrial Action by ASUU

Date: 13, August 2026

University Management has considered it necessary to address the University community and the public concerning the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Nasarawa State University, Keffi Branch, and the efforts being made to resolve the issues raised.

We recognise that the disruption of academic activities has caused understandable concern, uncertainty and hardship to students, parents and staff. Management shares these concerns. Our foremost responsibility remains the protection of the academic calendar, the welfare of staff and students, and the stability, integrity and continued development of the University.

Understanding the Issues

The demands presented by ASUU include:
• Earned Academic Allowances;
• arrears arising from the 25 and 35 per cent salary increases;
• outstanding wage awards and minimum-wage-related payments;
• implementation of applicable provisions of the revised Federal Government-ASUU agreement;
• domestication of the 70-year retirement age for academic staff;
• domestication and implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme; and
• clarification of the Government’s counterpart pension contributions.

Management acknowledges the legitimacy of constructive engagement regarding staff welfare. It is, however, important for the public to understand that several of the issues under discussion are national in origin, accumulated over many years and predate the current University administration. Some require policy, legislative or financial action beyond the direct authority of University Management.

Accordingly, the current situation should not be interpreted as a failure of concern or willingness on the part of the present administration. It is the consequence of inherited and interconnected obligations that require sustained cooperation among

Gov. Sule Pledges ₦262m Monthly to Address NSUK ASUU Strike Demands, Appeals to Lecturers to Resume

Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, has pledged an additional ₦262 million monthly to Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), as part of efforts to address outstanding lecturers’ entitlements and resolve the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), NSUK chapter.

Governor Sule made the commitment on Wednesday at the 2026 Nasarawa Youth Summit in Akwanga, organised by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Nasarawa State Chapter, to commemorate the International Youth Day.

The ASUU-NSUK chapter declared a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike on Monday, August 10, citing the continued non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and other unresolved local issues affecting academic staff. The union said it had exhausted several avenues of dialogue without securing satisfactory implementation of the agreements.

Among the demands previously outlined by the union are the implementation of the 40 per cent salary increase agreed with the Federal Government, payment of outstanding Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), arrears of the 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increments, and arrears relating to the ₦70,000 national minimum wage and ₦35,000 wage award. ASUU also demanded improved funding for NSUK and implementation of professorial allowances.

The union further called for domestication of the contributory pension scheme and prompt remittance of government contributions, implementation of the compulsory retirement age for professors, regular constitution of visitation panels and payment of full salaries as pensions to retired professors.

Recent reports put the total value of outstanding entitlements at more than ₦3 billion, although Governor Sule, in explaining his administration’s intervention, focused on an outstanding allowance of about ₦362 million relating to additional

NSUK VC Clarifies FMC Keffi MoU, Says Partnership Is for Clinical Training, Not Ownership Transfer

The Management of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), has clarified that the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the University and the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Keffi, is strictly a collaborative academic and clinical training partnership and does not involve the transfer of ownership or management of the Federal Government-owned health institution.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Sa'adatu Hassan Liman, made the clarification during an interactive session with selected journalists held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, in her office at the Senate Building, following public discussions and misconceptions surrounding the agreement.

Professor Liman explained that the MoU establishes a strategic framework through which both institutions will work together to strengthen medical education, clinical research, and healthcare service delivery while maintaining their separate identities and statutory responsibilities.

She stated that the collaboration is designed to support the training of students in the University's College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, particularly those pursuing programmes in Medicine and Surgery, Nursing Sciences, Medical Laboratory Science, and other allied health disciplines.

"For the avoidance of doubt, the Memorandum of Understanding does not transfer the management or ownership of the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, to Nasarawa State University, Keffi. Both institutions will retain their respective identities and statutory responsibilities while working synergistically to improve medical training and healthcare delivery," the Vice-Chancellor said.

According to Professor Liman, the partnership will provide NSUK students with access to FMC Keffi's laboratories, specialised medical equipment, and clinical facilities for practical instruction, mandatory clinical postings, industrial training, internships, and other hands-on learning experiences essential for producing competent healthcare professionals.

She further explained that, under the agreement, the Federal Medical Centre, Keffi, will serve as the University's Teaching and Clinical Training Centre for its medical and allied health programmes, thereby enhancing the quality of professional training and expanding opportunities for experiential learning.

The Vice-Chancellor urged members of the public, stakeholders, and the media to disregard misleading reports suggesting that the University had taken over the management or ownership of the hospital. She advised that all information concerning the partnership should be obtained from official communications issued by the University and the Federal Medical Centre.

Professor Liman reaffirmed NSUK's commitment to forging strategic partnerships that promote academic excellence, innovation, and national development, expressing confidence that the collaboration would produce highly skilled healthcare professionals, strengthen clinical education, and contribute significantly to improving healthcare delivery in Nigeria.
