In September, during our review of ‘The Trade Visibility Gap’, one crucial reality stood out: Businesses have a lot of data; but what is more important is building a bridge that connects this data.

Every transaction coveys the same commercial relationship, yet each participant has a different view of the actual flow.

Soon, we’d discover what each participant in a trade transaction actually sees.

The questions are clear;
* How can you align isolated perspectives into a single, actionable picture?
* How does your team handle fragmented data across your partner networks?

Let’s discuss!

One of the most interesting points from last week’s conversation came from our speaker, Adedayo Elegbe.

He compared today’s trade data problem to the Ancient Mariner’s “water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink”: there is data everywhere, but because it isn’t connected, it isn’t usable.

It speaks directly to the question we’re exploring: what information is available, what remains invisible, and what could better visibility change?

The webinar is over. The question isn’t.

Yesterday, we brought together different perspectives around one question: how much of a business’s commercial activity can the people making decisions about it actually see?

We talked about invoices, payments, commercial relationships, access to finance and the amount of information already being generated across African trade.
One thing kept coming up: the problem isn’t necessarily that the data doesn’t exist. It’s that much of it sits in different places, without the context that makes it useful.

Here are five things we’re still thinking about from the conversation.

And we’re continuing it.

Tomorrow.

Two hours.

One question at the centre of it: What could African businesses do differently if the trade they are already doing became easier to see, verify and understand?

What happens after the invoice is issued?

We kept coming back to this question. An invoice tells you a transaction happened, but it doesn’t tell you how regularly two businesses trade, what happens after goods are delivered, how payment behaviour shifts over time, or what any of that reveals about the strength of a business relationship.

That gap is part of why we’re building Trade Network.

Nevertheless, before we talk product, we want to unpack the problem properly with people who deal with it every day.

A distributor may have years of repeat orders. Consistent supplier relationships. Regular payments. Growing transaction volumes. A clear pattern of commercial activity.

But how much of that can be easily demonstrated when the business needs working capital?
This is where trade visibility becomes more than an operational issue.
It becomes a financing issue.

At our webinar “The Trade Visibility Gap: What African Businesses Still Can’t See”, we’ll explore what financial
institutions need to understand about the businesses they serve, and whether more connected, verifiable trade activity can create better signals for decision-making.

Enterprise systems have transformed what businesses can understand about their own operations.

However, trade does not stop at the edge of one organisation. It continues through distributors, retailers, payments, inventory movements, repeat orders and financing relationships.

That creates a different question: How much can a business actually see once trade moves beyond its own four walls?

We’re putting that question on the table on the 24th of September where industry voices will unpack this gap.

African trade moves goods across borders every day, but visibility often stops at the warehouse door.

Manufacturers can’t see what’s happening downstream, distributors are flying blind on demand, retailers struggle to prove trust to suppliers and financial institutions hesitate to fund businesses they can’t fully see.

The result? Missed opportunities, broken trust, and growth that stalls not for lack of ambition, but for lack of visibility.

We’re bringing together industry voices to unpack this gap, and start a conversation on what real trade visibility could look like for African businesses.
