The best explanation I’ve seen on how microchips are made.

Have you ever held a CPU and wondered how billions of transistors fit into something smaller than your palm?

It’s decades of physics, chemistry, and precision engineering measured in nanometers.

-Ed put together one of the clearest explanations.

At its core, electronics is just this:
controlling electric charge to represent, process, and transmit information.

Every text you send, every video you stream, every AI model you run is electrons being carefully told where to go and when to stop.

That’s the quiet power behind modern technology.

We invent number systems to make sense of reality.

We often think numbers are natural but numbers are a human choice.

Humans chose decimal (base 10) not because it’s superior, but partly because we counted with ten fingers. yes! biology shaped mathematics long before logic did.

We choose binary for computers not because it’s elegant, but because it’s reliable and has a clearer states: on or off (0 or 1).

Decimal is convenient for humans.
Binary is resilient for machines.

The insight?
Numbers don’t exist on their own.
We invent number systems to make sense of reality.

Most people think a computer is just an electronic device.

That's wrong.

A computer is not electronics first.

It's a rule-following system that manipulates symbols.

Electricity is just one way to build it.

(Computers can be mechanical, biological, or even quantum.)

Before machines, people were the computers.

NASA used human computers (many were women)

They solved:

Orbital mechanics

Trajectory calculations

A computer is the process, not the machine.

Data vs Information

Data and information are not the same.
Most people confuse them.

Data is raw.
Numbers, symbols, signals.
By itself, it means nothing.
Information is data + context.
The same number can mean age, money, temperature, or nothing depending on interpretation.

Simple rule to remember: Data is what exists.
Information is what it means to someone, for something.

CPU vs GPU is no longer the full story.

Modern systems run on an entire ecosystem of Processing Units (PUs), each designed for a specific kind of work.

Today, we have:
➡CPU for general-purpose logic
➡GPU for massive parallel computation
➡TPU / NPU / IPU for AI and neural networks
➡DSP / ISP / VPU for signals, images, audio, and video
➡DPU / Network processors for data center infrastructure
➡MCUs & real-time processors for control systems and embedded devices
➡FPGAs for reconfigurable, adaptive computing

And this list is still growing.

New PUs are continuously being developed to:
Improve efficiency
Reduce power consumption
Bring compute closer to data (edge & memory)
Handle workloads traditional CPUs were never designed for

The future of computing is not faster single processors.

It’s heterogeneous systems

Clock speed alone doesn't make a processor fast.

When we talk about processors, you often hear people brag about “3.5 GHz!” or “5 GHz!” well, a higher number does not automatically mean better performance.

A processor’s speed is governed by its clock cycles. One clock cycle is essentially one tick in which the CPU can perform a basic operation.

But here’s the catch: clock speed alone isn’t enough to determine how fast a processor really is.

Instruction Set Architecture (ISA): Different processors can do more per cycle depending on the instructions they support.

Cache Size: Larger or smarter caches reduce the time spent fetching data from RAM.

RAM & Memory Bandwidth: If your processor waits on memory, clock speed doesn’t matter.

Pipeline & Parallelism: Modern CPUs can execute multiple instructions simultaneously.

Specialized Support: Features like SIMD, AI accelerators, or integrated GPUs change performance per task.

So next time you compare processors, don’t just chase the GHz number. Look at the full ecosystem.
