I still remember the day Excel almost broke me!😂
I had over 200,000 rows in a spreadsheet, trying to force it to do something it was never made for. Formulas kept breaking. The file kept freezing. What should've taken 2 minutes took me so many hours!
That's when it hit me, the problem wasn't Excel. The problem was ME using one tool for EVERY job.
Excel was my comfort zone, so I just... never left it. Big data, small data, one-time reports, weekly reports... all Excel, all the time. Until it stopped working for me.
Here's what I do now, and honestly, it changed everything:
If it's a small, quick, one-time thing, Excel gets the job done fast. No need to overcomplicate it!
If the data is huge or I need the same report to run reliably over and over, that's SQL's job. It's built for exactly that.
And if stakeholders need a dashboard they can click through and explore themselves Power BI all the way. It turns numbers into something people actually want to look at!
Most of my projects now use all three together: SQL to pull and clean the data, Excel for quick double-checks, Power BI for the final dashboard. Each tool doing what it's actually good at!
That frozen spreadsheet taught me something I wish I knew sooner, you don't need to be a master of ONE tool. You just need to know which tool fits the problem in front of you!
So if you're new to this and feel like you HAVE to be an SQL genius or an Excel wizard to be "good enough" you don't! Just learn what each tool is for, and let the problem guide you.
Curious ... is there a tool you leaned on too much early on before realizing there was a better way? Tell me in the comments! 👇
