📕 What Makes a Book Rare?

When we talk about rare books, we mean books that have a limited supply.

When a lot of people want a book and there are few copies available, that book’s value increases.

The value of a book as a collectible is directly related to the book’s relative scarcity.

First editions tend to be considered “rare” because the first printing of a book is often limited in numbers.

Copyrighting your works is a vital step in protecting your intellectual property, but you should be aware of 8 essential facts first:

©️ Copyright protection is automatic
©️ Copyright does not protect ideas
©️ You must be the original creator
©️ Copyright registration is not necessary
©️ You can only protect tangible works
©️ Protection is international
©️ You keep the control and can pass on rights
©️ Understand fair use and exceptions

Copyrighting your writing prior to sharing it with others is a vital step in ensuring that your creative work is protected.

Whether you’re submitting an article, novel, or any other form of writing, protecting your content is important.

🧒🏽 Readers who see themselves reflected in the books they’re reading are typically more engaged and curious about different things they can learn from a book.

👧🏾 When children don’t regularly see an accurate representation of themselves, it sends them a powerful and harmful message that they don't belong.

👦🏿 It’s important to see the joys of life and the experiences of diverse cultures in books. It allows children to see things society might be telling them they're not allowed to see or experience.

✍🏽 Submissions for the Biyi Bándélé Bursary for Emerging Writers of the African Diaspora open on 1 June 2026

ℹ️ The Biyi Bándélé Bursary is a new initiative established by the family of Biyi Bándélé in partnership with Brixton House and Curtis Brown to honour the legacy of acclaimed Nigerian writer and filmmaker Biyi Bándélé.

➡️ In the first year, this annual bursary will support three emerging writers of African diaspora heritage, aged 18 and over, who are living in the UK.

➡️ The bursary is designed to foster new talent, encourage bold storytelling, and amplify underrepresented voices within theatre, film, and literature. The programme begins in Spring 2027.
