A research topic can sound interesting and still be difficult or impossible to carry out.

Before you commit to yours, ask:

Who exactly are you studying?
“Students” or “workers” may be too broad. Which students? Which workers? In what institution, organisation or location?

What exactly are you measuring?
Words such as “impact” and “effect” are incomplete unless you clearly identify what is being affected and how it will be measured.

Can you realistically access the data?
Consider whether you can reach the participants, obtain permission, access the records and complete the study within the available time.

Compare these two topics:

Broad topic: The impact of social media on students in Nigeria.

More researchable topic: The relationship between daily Instagram use and study time among final-year undergraduates in one Nigerian university.

Narrowing a topic does not make it weaker. It makes the study clearer, more focused and easier to complete properly.

Sometimes, the best thing you can do before sending a chapter to your supervisor is to stop editing for a moment and check whether the chapter actually makes sense as a whole.

Before you click send, ask:

Is the purpose clear?
Can someone tell what this chapter or section is trying to achieve?
Does every major claim have support?
Important statements should have evidence, data, a credible source or a clear argument behind them.
Do the sections connect logically?
The reader should not have to guess why you moved from one idea to another.
Are key terms consistent?
Do not keep changing the name of the same variable, concept, population or study location.
Can you explain and defend what you wrote?
You should understand why each important part is there, especially when your supervisor asks.

A quick check now can save you from correcting things you could have spotted yourself.

When a supervisor writes “develop this point”, the first instinct is often to make the paragraph longer.

But longer does not always mean better.

Usually, they are asking you to go deeper:

Explain why the point matters.
Support it with evidence.
Show how it connects to the argument you are building.

Before adding another sentence, ask yourself:

Why does this matter?
What evidence supports it?
How does it connect?

That is what development actually looks like.

One thing I have noticed about research is that confusion can easily look like laziness from the outside.

A student may spend hours staring at a methodology chapter, theoretical framework, research question, or data analysis section and still not know what to do next.

Sometimes the problem is not unwillingness to learn. The explanation simply never became practical.

That is part of the thinking behind Novapoint.

But maybe the real issue is bigger than the argument itself.

For years, young Nigerians were told that education was the sure path: study hard, get a degree, get a job, build a life.

But when schools keep failing students, jobs are scarce, and certificates no longer open the same doors, people naturally begin to look for other ways to survive.

That does not mean education is useless.

It means education must become more useful.

A certificate is important. But it is not the same as competence.
Visibility is powerful. But it is not the same as intelligence.

The real question is not education or hustle.

The real question is:

Does what you know actually make you better at what you do?
