Rastafarians in Kenya are awaiting a High Court ruling that could determine whether they can legally use cannabis for religious purposes.

The Rastafari Society of Kenya filed the case in 2021, seeking to decriminalise the use of cannabis for spiritual worship. The ruling is expected on July 15.

Members of the movement say cannabis is central to their faith and is used during communal rituals for meditation, inner peace and connection with “Jah”, or God.

“Rastafari is our culture and smoking w**d or ma*****na is part of our culture,” said Mwendwa Wambua, also known as Ras Prophet, spokesperson for the society.

Although Rastafari is recognised in Kenya, cannabis remains illegal. Possession can lead to a jail term and a heavy fine.

Members of the community say they continue to face arrests and discrimination, not only over cannabis use but also because of their dreadlocks, which they consider a symbol of their faith.

Ahead of the ruling, Rastafarians gathered in Kibera, one of Nairobi’s largest informal settlements, where they also run the Haile Selassie Foundation. The foundation trains young people in practical skills such as weaving and beadwork while teaching them about the Rastafari faith.

The case has drawn attention to the balance between religious freedom and Kenya’s drug laws.
