5 TIPS FOR CHOOSING ARTWORK THAT ACTUALLY FINISHES A ROOM.
1 · Size the wall first, fall in love with the art second
Frame width should be roughly two-thirds of the furniture below it, and the centre of the piece should sit at eyeline, about 150cm from the floor.
Why it matters: A piece that is too small on a large wall reads as a poster, no matter what it cost you. Buy the proportion, then the picture and measure the wall before you view anything.
2 · Match the artwork’s tone to the room, not to your mood that afternoon
Stay within two shades of your wall colour, never an exact match, never a hard clash. Cream walls want warm sand and ochre. White walls want charcoal and ivory. Grey walls want indigo, navy or sea-foam.
Why it matters: You’ll live with the room every day and the artwork for years. A piece that fights the wall makes the whole space feel unsettled, and it is the single fastest way to make an expensive frame look cheap. Bring a photo of your wall to the decision and not a feeling.
3 · Decide where it lives before you decide what it is
Master bedroom → calm, muted, horizon tones. Living room → one confident statement piece, not seven quiet ones. Office or reception → something that supports the brand rather than decorating it. Airbnb short-let → photogenic and durable, because it gets photographed and cleaned constantly.
Why it matters: The same artwork that would be perfect in a hallway can be completely wrong above a bed. Buyers who shop by “I like this” end up moving pieces around the house for years. Buyers who shop by “this room needs X” get it right the first time.
