One thing I’m learning on my journey as a developer is this:

Having a mentor changes everything.

Tutorials are great, they help you get started, understand syntax, and follow along. But they don’t always show you the real challenges. They don’t always teach you how to think, how to debug, or how to approach problems when things don’t go as planned.

That’s where mentorship comes in.

A mentor doesn’t just show you what to do, they guide you on how to think. They point out the gaps you didn’t even know existed and help you grow faster by learning from their experience.

I’m realizing that combining:
Learning (tutorials)
Guidance (mentorship)
Practice (building)

…is what really accelerates growth.

If you’re learning to code, don’t rely on tutorials alone. Find someone ahead of you, ask questions, and learn from their journey too.

That’s where the real growth happens

I’ve been on a journey of learning web development, and recently I also started teaching a student alongside my learning process.

What surprised me is this: there are concepts I thought I didn’t fully understand yet, but while explaining them to someone else, I realized I actually understood them better than I thought.

Teaching has been reinforcing my learning in a powerful way. It’s one thing to know something in theory, and another to be able to break it down simply for someone else to understand. In the process, I’ve also been able to identify gaps in my knowledge and improve further.

This experience is teaching me that learning doesn’t stop when you study, it deepens when you share.

So I’ve been learning React for a while now…

Not gonna lie, at the beginning it felt like I was just memorizing things without really understanding them
Components, props, state… everything just felt scattered.

But recently, something started clicking.

I’m beginning to understand why things are done a certain way, not just how to do them. Like breaking things into components and managing state properly it actually makes sense now.

I still run into bugs that stress me out but fixing them feels really good after.

Right now I’m just focused on building, making mistakes, and improving little by little.

No pressure, just progress.

Learning to code changed the way I think.

I don’t just see problems anymore.

I see systems.

I see patterns.

I see solutions waiting to be built.

Being a developer is not just about writing code.

It’s about:

- Breaking problems down
- Thinking logically
- Building step by step
- Improving constantly

That mindset is what I’m building every day.

Not just skills…

But the ability to solve real problems.

And that’s what makes the difference.

Most beginners think learning is about watching tutorials.
Taking notes.
Completing courses.

I used to think the same.

But I was wrong.

The real growth happens when you stop watching… and start building.

After every class, I don’t just move on.

I spend 3-7 hours building.

Not copying.

Not following step-by-step.

But actually:

• Trying things that confuse me
• Breaking code on purpose
• Fixing what doesn’t work
• Starting again when I get stuck

And honestly?

It’s frustrating sometimes.

But that’s where the learning is.

Not in comfort.
In confusion.
In problem-solving.

I’ve realized something important:

You don’t become a developer by watching tutorials.

You become a developer by solving problems with your hands.

So if you’re just starting out:

Stop waiting to ā€œfeel ready.ā€

Start building now.

Even if it’s messy.
Even if it’s small.
Even if it’s not perfect.

Because that’s where real growth lives.
