This morning, my phone buzzed with a surprise call from a top Nigerian politician. He was impressed by my articles exposing government underperformance and the masses' suffering. Four pieces had resonated with him, and he wanted to discuss next week's protest. I was startled - and amused - that he had my number and was monitoring my activities, including our shared membership in Rescue Nigeria Ambassador Initiative (RNAI) and Beyond African Leadership Forum (BALF).
But here's the thing: I had already decided to skip the protest. I feared hoodlums hijacking the event, bloody violence, government indifference, or exploitation. Protests, I realized, might not be the best way to address our grievances. Nigerians are frustrated - and rightly so. The cost of foodstuffs, fuel, and living is skyrocketing, yet the government seems unconcerned about the economy and people's struggles.
Instead, I believe we should engage our local representatives, from chairmen to the presidency. They'll take our messages to the top. We need to hold them accountable and ensure our voices are heard. The EndSARS protest and Aba women riot in 2020 and 1929 showed us the destruction protests can cause. Let's try:
- Constructive dialogue with government reps
- Peaceful rallies and town hall meetings
- Social media awareness and support mobilization
- Supporting policy-changing organizations
We deserve better! Let's demand:
- Affordable food and fuel
- Improved economy and living standards
- Government accountability and transparency
Together, we can build a more accountable government that prioritizes its people's needs. Let's make our voices heard and create a better Nigeria without violence
