Join the Ajami Heritage Project
Africa possesses one of the world's richest yet least digitized written traditions.
For centuries, scholars documented knowledge in Ajami—African languages such as Hausa, Fulfulde, and Kanuri written using Arabic-derived scripts. These manuscripts contain history, medicine, law, literature, commerce, science, and culture.
Today, almost none of this knowledge is accessible to modern AI.
A*O Intelligence Lab is launching the Ajami Heritage Project to change that.
We are building a comprehensive digital corpus that will enable AI systems to understand, preserve, and learn from these invaluable manuscripts while ensuring future generations can benefit from them.
We are looking for:
📜 Manuscript owners and custodians
🎓 Islamic scholars and Ajami experts
✍️ Transcribers and annotators
💻 AI researchers and software developers
🏛 Universities, libraries, archives, and cultural institutions
🤝 Volunteers passionate about preserving African heritage
Our initial focus includes:
• Hausa Ajami
• Fulfulde Ajami
• Kanuri Ajami
• Yoruba Ajami
This is more than a technology project—it's a cultural preservation initiative and an opportunity to ensure Africa's written heritage becomes part of the future of Artificial Intelligence.
If you'd like to contribute manuscripts, expertise, partnerships, or volunteer your time, we'd love to hear from you.
